v28 seems to have killed DVD reading in MKIV!

I downloaded and burned the V28 image, then went to update both MKIV nav systems in our Z4 and X3. Both updated apparently fine. I then loaded nav discs in both. The Z4 worked as usual, both with an original nav DVD and with a backup disc I'd burned myself. However, the X3 will no longer recognize a nav DVD. It just keeps saying either to wait a moment or that there is no nav disc in the drive. I've tried yanking the fuse to reboot the unit as well as downgrading to v27 then back up to the current version, but nothing seems to help. (It's worth noting that it no longer will read the DVD in version 27, either.)

Any ideas what to try next? The dealer is an hour away and I'd love to avoid killing the time that will be required to have them deal with this.

Yesterday I upgraded X3 to v28, using the latest 2007.1 maps that I had burned a day earlier. Navigation worked fine for few hours then after starting it after some 10 minutes break it kept showing "please wait" for the navigation, for at least 30 minutes I was driving. All other screens worked. I changed to the original dvd with maps, the same thing. I left it alone for an hour, started, Nav was back.

So may be it will come back for you after some time.

It's been a couple of days, so I'm not very confident about that.

My MKIV is doing the exact same thing. However, I did not update to V28. I still have V27. The only change I made is I went to the new 2007.1 DVD that I burned. It worked great for about a week. Now my screen just says wait for DVD to load or No DVD in the drive. I put my old 2006.2 back in that worked great for more than a year, and it does the same thing.

Anybody ever figure this out? Its hard to believe that my drive could be toast by simply updating the Nav DVD.

It would be helpful if you explained what the format (RAR, ISO etc.) was of your downloaded file & how you burnt it. Your V28 CD obviously has corrupt files - there is nothing wrong with your Nav computers. There are many cleverer IT people than me on this forum who can help.

Here's a suggestion: Download UltraISO & use it to burn two ISO images to your HDD.

1. Burn an ISO image of your downloaded file.
2. Burn an ISO image of the V28 disk you created.

Then use Alcohol 120% to burn two V28 CD's from each HDD ISO image - at 1x speed only! I'll bet (1.) will solve your agony.

My unit won't recognize any DVD or CD that I put into it including the original Navteq 2006.2 DVD. When I insert any DVD or CD you can hear the unit spinning up and down louder than usual. My display will say ...."please wait". This spinning up and down goes on continuously for about 2 minutes then the display shows "No Nav DVD/CD in Drive. Please Insert DVD/CD into Drive". However the Nav DVD is in the drive. I can push the eject and the DVD does come out, but after I reinsert it, the whole process just starts over resulting in the No Nav DVD message. I pulled the fuses for about an hour, but there was no difference after I put them back in. The drive is clearly not able to recognize any media put into it regardless of origin. When I go to settings on the screen it shows that I have version 4/70 which is V.27. Also when I put it in the service mode it is showing an accurate location and showing that it is tracking satellites, so the problem is not with the computer itself. It seems that I have a bad DVD/CD drive mechanism. Anybody ever seen this and if so what is the fix? I hope this does not result in my having to buy a whole new MK4 unit. However it is looking more and more like that is going to be the case.Any Ideas?Mark

footsurg, sounds like the laser pickup has gone out of alignment, and it now won't read discs. If it’s still under warranty, try and get it replaced/repaired, if not a new (or 2nd hand) is needed.

mstevens, could be that the v28 disc was badly burned (made) and the laser pickup has tried to work round the bad disc and knocked the pickup out of alignment or even corrupted the loading nav image, If it’s still under warranty, try and get it replaced/repaired, if not a new (or 2nd hand) is needed.


I doubt that the upgrade will have broken the drive itsself, but that said, you are loading an operating system into the nav memory and the process will likley pick up errors if the upgrade disc (or map disc) is even slightly out.


Always, always write at single speed, even if it appears to work at a higher speed.

IMHO BMW have adjusted the laser light to a tolerance where it makes the use of many DVD-R/DVD+R disks unuseable but would still allow the use of original disks without problem, you cannot really blaim them for a move like this.

When I get the time I will check the firmware for parameter adjustment in this area, there should be no reason we could not put it back to what it was

Note, I have nothing at the moment to backup this statement, but with the many problems I have seen other forum members having, it would seem a likey option.

As a footnote.

The TY (Taiyo Yuden) DVDs are still working very well for me, these can be found by brands such as Verbatim and Panasonic, the 4x and 8x are the best to go for, of cause the 2x, if you can still find them
