Unhappy Laser change MKIV gone terribly wrong...please help *SOLVED*

I have changed the laser on my MKIV unit, and followed the Instructions I found on this board. Connected the unit today, and turned on the ignition.
Then I heard a "ticking" noise from the monitor, which lasted for some seconds, and I noticed a smell of burned electronics.

There is no picture on my monitor. I can however eject the cassette fine. Also the DVD drive seems to work, I can insert and eject the disc.

But my indicator lights does not work any more. Neither does the alarm, central locking or air conditioning.
I have also got an error light on the SMG gear box.

Does anyone have any idea of what could have happened here?

Best Regards

Tommy

Unplug nav drive
Unplug monitor
Check all fuses
Check the ibus voltage

Something has failled, the monitor backlight is a possibility
The failled unit has either blown a fuse to the GM or has locked the ibus

Thanks KiwiJochen for your suggestions.

I have managed to bring back most of the failed components, except that the steering wheel buttons still does not work. And I cannot clear the error on the SMG gearbox...tried to clear it with Ediabas / INPA but it keeps coming back when I start the car...So it seems like a visit to the dealer is imminent...

On the bright side, the navi module is working great, it's so much faster navigating through the menus now. And it doesn't say "no disc" every 5 minutes anymore

BTW...if there's somebody out there who feels the urge to try to interpret the errors I have gotten from INPA, please be my guest.
I have it as a PDF...I've tried to make some sense out of them...but I don't know enough about these things.

Regards

Tommy

Post your PDF so we can help you

Remember: Steering wheel buttons only work with ign in Pos2
If the buttons do not illuminate then suspect the power feed
Also: the slipring may be faulty.

There's no illumination...so maybe a power issue. Is here a fuse that covers the steering wheel?

Here's the report from Ediabas...3 errors that will not clear.

OK, so you have a 01/2002 E46 M3 Coupé S54 Europe Left hand drive N
It always helps if you tells what car you have - diagnosis on a Z4 is very different to an E38

Anyway that error report tells a lot.

1. MFL error - a static MFL error exists (MFL=Multifuncton steering wheel)
Check power wiring to MFL and to control unit, check slip ring, check button boards in MFL.

2. Brake light switch
A sporadic "Short circuit to battery or value too high" error exists.
Check brake light switch, replace if necessary.
Check wiring loom and connector around brake light switch for chaffing and damage
As brake light switch and MFL are in the same area of the car, check carefully that area for anything out of the ordinary - wiring loom damage etc.

EG: a chaffed wiring loom would explain the electrical burning smell you had.

Thanks a lot KiwiJochen.

I now have a starting point...I'll disassemble the steering coloumn covers, and start checking cables from there.

Forgot all about the car model, sorry about that

Okay...I'm kinda embarrased now...

I had a really hard time accepting that a simple laser change should wreak such havoc on the car's electrical systems....so I once more had a look in the fuse box, arming myself with my trusty multimeter.

Then I noticed fuse number 7 is missing....put in a new 5 amp...and lo and behold.....
Everything is okay. Brake lights work normally, SMG light is gone, and MFL is working. I just can't believe I missed that.

Got an airbag warning light, which I cleared with Ediabas, and now I'm happy

Stupid mistake....must have lost it when I started to pull fuses...but I'm really glad it worked itself out.

Thanks KiwiJochen for helping.

Regards

Tommy
