Help: Navigation wont work.

Navigation has been working without any problems for a long time. (previously had issues, but turns out original dvd was too scratched up, so a replacement dvd fixed it)

Its a mk4 unit with V28 software update.

Original dvd - 2002-1
Replacement dvd - 2007-1
New dvd - 2007-2

Few weeks ago, Navigation stopped working, everytime i click on navigation, it says please wait, takes a few minutes, then errors out, no dvd in the unit, or cannot read the dvd. (similar symptoms when i had the first issue long time ago)
So i thought maybe i scratched up the dvd. Found a small scratch.
Ordered another dvd, tried it today and same errors.

So i'm not sure if its the new disc that i got that's bad? or the unit itself.
I had my software update disc handy, and popped that in...the unit read it right away and tried to update. So now i'm puzzled.

What do you all think? advise? tips? Any way to test if the unit is still good? Last resort is to buy a replacement unit (pricey)

Thanks
Franklin

Update: I just upgraded to V31 without a hitch...so i assume the unit is still reading. It was burnt onto a CDR.
The Navteq dvds are all original.

I did cleaned the dvds with tissue, and after a minute of reading, it came on, i navigated and when i input something, it stalled. I changed dvds, it came on again, i tried to zoom out, it zoomed, but the map was blank.

I'm gonna get a dvd cleaner tomorrow to try out. If that doesnt work, i'm outta ideas.

Thanks
Franklin

I think your DVD laser lens is broken. a complete new unit for the MK4 is about $ 200....

Your CD laser is fine but the DVD laser is weak / old / dead.

You need to replace the laser head (hard) or entire DVD/Cd mechanism (easy) or entire nav unit (easy)

Above is listed in order of costs.... laser head is cheapest, entire Mk4 unit is most expensive.

Sounds like a weak / dead laser. Replace the laser.

Or a dirty, scratched nav disc. Insert a clean, undamaged disc.
