Options:

1. Send nav to VDO for repair (re-flash)
2. Throw nav away
3. Cry

The MKIII is prone to damage if the power is disconnected before it powers down and the red lights go off. I don't think the MKIV has this problem. Do not open/close doors while doing a SW update as it will cause a voltage blip. Just leave the trunk and door open until you finish.

This happened to me recently because I think my nav doesn't like a Sony CD writer that I tried. It put up a message to the effect that the "Update failed". Then there was only a black screen. I then simply loaded an older upgrade CD that had worked in the past, and it installed that version without any problem.

v32 with a navi02

I might be missing something... Hoping someone can help.

I just ran the v32 upgrade. Seemed to load just fine and now the software read 8.4.4 (for the navi02). I assume it is loaded, but the accept screen still doesn't go away after any period of time (I got the impression updates after v28 had the timed remove feature).

Also, the OS software reads as FF.FF.FF hex. Is this correct? Should the accept screen be going away?

I'd prefer not to do the downgrade -> upgrade method if I can avoid it

Okay, I understand what everyone has said here, but my experience does not match what's been said.

Have Mk3 version 3-1/20 (I guess original from 12/00 build date) - bought V32 - loaded software successfully - the screen then came up with "insert key CD or version 17" - I ordered V17 (index 'x'), but it hasn't arrived yet - the BMW mechanic had V17 (index 'u') - we loaded that successfully and software version came up 3-1/30 - we reloaded V32 to see if it would update to 3-1/63(?) - again, screen came up with "Load key CD or version 17" - so again we inserted V17 - and again, software ended up at 3-1/30

What's wrong?

Maybe you have to update from 3-1/20 to v24... (I remember it is an USA version for update and recover the MK's). Once you have successfully updated. try to load the v32.

Latest update for MK-3 for European (I think) is:

Apologies if I'm wrong, but people got recover their MK Unit

Regards,
Manu.

You need to use the Key CD. This is a separate CD, and is different to the OS CD.

Once you have used the Key CD you can go beyond V17. Without Key CD, you are stuck at V17 or earlier.

Google is your friend here...

You will get to 3-1/63 with any Version of 22 OR higher but it will then ask for the key. Do what kiwi says. When you are below or at 17 you need the key to get higher.

For MKII you need any Version 21 OR higher to go to 2-1/81. No key needed.
