I felt however that it was perhaps his screen and not the system so I swapped his ink blemished screen out with my unblemished screen. Suposedly when he had it plugged it would drain the battery "within a few days".

My whole point of my post is if I should update the navOS, and I do want the custom splash screen... there are too many pages to read to follow this discussion and if I should update do I use a blank CD or DVD? Where do I get the new maps from? the one in my nav currently is a 2002 map.

Thank ANYONE for some insight
You should update first to the latest stock navOS. You need to make sure you are able to burn the update CD. Use a CD. Make sure you are loading the correct data and burn type especially if you have a MK3. Then when you are confident of the update procedure, then think about custom splash screens.

I'm quite positive that I have an MKIV.. So still use CD?

Yep, it's only about 24MB.

You nav will show 4-1/00 if you have the final version. Feel free to chuck the guy a few dollars for his hosting bill and for collecting all those handy files. MK3 users should always take care to use MODE2/FORM1 images eg V24 or the drive will be bricked.

you have MK4 as indicated by the 4-1/20, with color monitor, as indicated by the 4-1/20 , and sw version 18, or whatever the 4-1/20 is...

if you can source the part number 01 59 0 141 891 from a dealer (about $10), then you will get the lates sw version 32 for the MK4 on the original disk.

otherwise, you need to find a place that hosts the image and burn it on a slow speed to a CD. the regualr instructions tell you to turn the key to ON and not run the engine - I actually ran engine, just to make sure that the battery does not die on me... it did not affect the updating procedure

Thanks TerminatorX5, I just walked back in from updating my Software, it now reads 4-1/00, and I actually didn't use a CD(I believe that's where the confusion is coming from), I used a Memorex DVD-R and wrote it at 1x-2x speed(my computer had to do something because it was only formatted to write at the lowest speed of 4x or 8x) and after it finished burning the software I promptly took it to Beast(My X5s name ) and the software loaded and updated within less than 1min(like seriously it took less than a minute)...ANNNND I actually read YOUR process of what you did by running the engine instead of "ON" three days ago before actually posting my original message, so kudos to you...plus it's cold/windy out here and I'm in love with my heated seats(LOL). But nonetheless it's updated, now I just need to find the thread to change to "perspective view" and read up on the custom splash screens. Also I would like to thank Bob for his help as well... oh and btw I actually called the BMW dealership across the highway(seriously, its across the highway, I can look out of any of my windows in my place and see the dealership,GlobalImports BMW) and inquired about the software update and the guy in parts had NO CLUE what I was referring to, so I was going to go and pay the $10 but I didn't feel like going through the hassle.

I am glad I could help

I did not know that a burned DVD could be used in place of the CD - mental note for future reference...

When you called the dealer, did you give him the part number? usually they are clueless, and try to upsell you the maps for $200... lol... anyways, go into the hidden Nav menu (while in the settings screen, press and hold the menu knob, until the service menu appears)... when in the service menu, go through the options available, just to get to know what is there, and one of the options will be perspective view... set it to ON, and then go back to regular Nav screen... when you press the option for map view for North, or direction of travel, you will see the perspective... select it and - voila!!! remember, with perspective, you will lose the names of the streets (major ones will still be there)...

All of that process is off my memory, so, you might want to do a search just to be sure on how to proceed... trust but verify!!!

I honestly had purchased the DVD-R and DVD+Rdl yesterday because I was thinking,"well it says DVD_Video on the nav".. I spent practically a whole hour trying to decide whether to get CD or DVD packs to the point that the guy that was stocking came up to me 30mins later asking if I needed help and knowing that he would be just as lost as myself I said "no thank you" LOL. No I didn't give him the part number and you're exactly correct he TRIED to sell me the 2013 maps DVD for $250, then he transferred me to service because he had no idea what I was talking about and then service transferred me BACK to parts to the same nitwit, lol. Thank you for the memory info I will verify. NOW, how do I get the custom splash screens that I've updated my OS, do I just burn those files underneath the stock navOS and do the same procedure? Sorry if I'm back tracking, but there are A LOT of pages for this thread, lol.

i have not ventured into the custom screens but the Nav computer is looking for a different version number when it updates the firmware - so, your present version is 32, if you insert disk containing 25 or 35, the comp will take the disk, but if you insert modified firmware bearing version stamp of 32 - it will not... go figure, you can upgrade or downgrade but you can not reinstall...

So, most hacked versions have the 32.2 stamp, i think... as far as what to burn, we will need someone else to chime in...
