1996 was the first year for E39 (built from 1996-2003). It could also be an old E34 (built from 1988-1996).
The navigation-system (if not replaced later) could be MK1 or MK2. (MK1 is so slow it's barely usable, MK2 is not that much better...)

Either have your friend send you a picture of the car or the VIN of the car.

MK2 is easy to replace with an MK4 (I did that for my 740i in about 15 minutes), MK1 however is not.

Sure:

For MK1 to MK4 with 4:3 screen: You'll need an adapter/cable (part-no adapter: 61 12 8 381 219, part-no cable: 61 12 6 907 840) and the MK4 - in case you want to watch TV a new video-module (module HIGH, old video-module with MK1 was LOW) for 4:3 as well.

For MK1 to MK4 with 16:9 screen: You'll need an adapter/cable (see part-nos above), the MK4 and a 16:9-capable video-module.

For MK2 to MK4 with 4:3 screen: You just need the MK4 device, simply remove the external GPS-module from the MK2. MK4 has the GPS-module built-in. So the upgrade it's just plug and play.

For MK2 to MK4 with 16:9 screen: You additionally need a video-module which is 16:9 capable (from year 1999 on)

If he does not know what system he has ask him to go into settings and write down the number on the top right corner: X-Y/ZZ (this identifies what MKx, if color-monitor or not and the software-version...

I'm having problems installing 120%. Is there another program I can use to burn both files (.mds & .mdf) to a cd?

Geez, is this really so hard to understand?

For MK1 v26 contains the same version that v24.1 already had.
For MK2 v26 contains the same version as that v21 already had.
For MK3 v26 contains the same version as that v22 already had.
For MK4 v26 contains the new software-release 4-1/60

Don't get your panties in a bunch, pal. Relax.

I loaded v24 onto my MkIII and had problems with it, so I downgraded to v23 and since have had no problems.

I've only been here for about a year now, reading reported problems from members who have actually installed the updated software versions on MkII & MkIII drives. You're a little late to the party to be omniscient.
