MK 3 Not upgrading HELP!

I have a X5 4.4i with a MK 3 NAV computer. I am trying to upgrade the firmware due strange issues with the NAV unit. Addresses programmed into the unit will not save when you turn off the key. Also, the master volume always sets to +10. I have a V32 disk but it does not do anything once I insert the disk. I have left it in the unit overnight and no upgrade, it just sits at the screen. Any ideas?

Sounds like memory is corrupt, or faulty.

I can suggest the following, in the following order:

1. Delete all stored addresses. On some older OS versions, too many stored addresses caused memory issues.

2. Load new OS. If the nav cannot read a CD, maybe CD laser is faulty. Of course, make sure the OS is in the correct Mode2Form1 CD format. If you use a Mode1 CD, you'll crash the nav
Of course, make sure you are loading 3-1/63 (the best and last OS ever made for the Mk3)

3. If that doesn't fix it, then you have faulty flash memory. Send to SiemensVDO in Germany for repair, or replace with a Mk4.

1) what version are you running? 3-1/31? 3-1/50? 3-1/63? something different?

2) IF your display says 3-1/20 thru 3-1/31, you will need the key CD that is required to update the software past V17.1(3-1/31). Otherwise your screen will tell you to insert version 17 or the key CD.

3) If you are running 3-1/50 or 3-1/63(the last version for the Mk3) then (re)loading the V32 disc MAY reload & reset your software to 3-1/63. I don't know for sure.

I just upgraded my software from 3-1/20 to 3-1/31(v17.1), then I loaded the disc that came with the key CD that brought the software up to 3-1/50, from there I loaded the V32 disc and it finished upgrading my software to 3-1/63.

4) do you have any software discs? My used 2001 did not come with any and had never been updated even during the 3yr lease period of the 1st owner, which it should have. Everything I learned about the nav has been on this website. My Mk3 did not read any of the clone CDs I made from downloads, so I bought the CDs from my Idaho dealer. At first it was very confusing as BMW uses 2 version numbers to describe the same thing (v17=3-1/30, v17.1=3-1/31, and supposedly, v22 thru v32 will give you 3-1/63)

Let me know if you want the part numbers. My receipts are in the car, otherwise I would have posted them. But it all starts with what version you have.

I think the latest nav disks need the latest OS update in order to handle the newer address formats. I would recommend an OS update as the next step.

[QUOTE=reg]1) It is running 3-1/30.
You definitely want to go to 3-1/63

Does not ask for The CD key. My understanding is that insert the Update CD first then the key.[/B]

Yes, the process is simple:
1. Insert >V23 and perform update (any version after V23 is fine, they all contain 3-1/63).
2. After update, nav asks for Key CD. Insert Key CD
3. When nav has finished reading Key CD (a few seconds) it will eject Key CD.
4. Insert your map CD and enjoy!

PS: after major update, your nav will be empty. Addresses etc will need to be re-stored. Your nav will probably go to default coding (7er series, limousine, new-gen radio, no VIN number, etc)

So you should check and then code your nav to your car, using my NavCoder or the BMW software.

You have v17.0 loaded (3-1/30), to load software (not maps) to bring you to 3-1/63, you need one of the software CDs v23 thru v32 AND the key CD. The key CD allows the computer to upgrade past v17. Loading was real simple, just follow the screen instructions. Once started, DO NOT turn off the engine; or if installing with just the ignition on[postion 1?], DO NOT turn the key until all loading is done, the CD is ejected, and you have checked the nav screen to display "3-1/63".

My Nav SW 3-1/31 is all screwed up now! pls Help

I have SW3-1/31 and I attempted to upgrade to V 22.1 using a burned disc with an image file I got off of that russian website. I must have done something wrong because now I have a tiny red four-bladed fan light next to my menu select knob (lower right side of deck)

First of all, I have to manually select Nav when I turn my key to the first position, so I wasn't sure when I was supposed to eject the map disc. I waited until I got to the menu screen then ejected. Window popped up telling me that I needed to insert a map disc, so I inserted the V22.1 and that's where things went screwy. The nav option on my menu when black (couldn't select nav anymore). Also I when I would try to reinsert the factory map disc or any of the other discs - key CD or V22.1 - it would just reject it and spit it right out.

FUnny thing is, I just got into the car and now I can select nav from the menu, but there's no disc inside. Wierd!

Any suggestions???

I did my installs with the motor running - I bought my software discs from the dealer. I've since been informed that is against BMWNA policy. I also was told BMW does not upgrade Nav software unless the customer requests it and that upgrades are not part of any warrantys.

My BEST GUESS is to reload the v22.1 software and follow the screen instructions - And when it asks for a map cd, then insert a map cd vs a software cd - if it continues to eject the software disc without going thru a loading & processing cycle, then someone more knowledgeable than I will have to tell you if you are SOL and need a replacement MK3 or Mk4

Sorry for the late response, but I've been away without my laptop

This indicates that the Aux. Vent is on. You can turn it on and off under those settings.
