Mk4 intermitant problem

Guys newbie here looking for some advice please

My Satnav (X5 3.0d 2003) occasionally turns off or does not start up leaving the screen blue (rather like an 80's computer look!!) and no sat nav option

When it does this the red light on the mk4 unit does not light either

Main dealer have said it needs a new unit at £2.5k!!! Which given current market valuation of the car itself is roughly a 1/6th of its value!!!

Any ideas what the problem might be and if i do indeed need a new drive unit would be most welcome

Cheers

The blue screen is displeyed by TV-module, and it happens when nav computer doesn't start. Try updating nav software.

I Know that problem. The most of the time is a new (or other) MK4 unit the solution.

You can buy a used one, thats cheaper then new

Do not hurry to buy new or even used navi unit.... Try to reanimate the existing one. It is quite difficult to kill MK4 (but fo course still possible ;-) )

Download the navi SW, burn it on the disk. Before the update make the reset of your navi (close all doors, open trunk, wait till the light on the navi switched off, disconnect 2 jacks from the behind, wait for 15-20 min and connect navi again). Then try to update your unit with the burned SW. It could take some time when your navi starts to update.

Good luck!

Hi guys,

I recently had a similar problem with my sat nav/computer and its quite worrying!. Have got pictures below and would appreciate any help/advice..

Basically as I was driving along on the M1, all of a sudden the computer screen turned off then about 30 seconds later came back on but looking all blue!

This is what the main screen looked like

and this is what the computer option looked like

So I pulled over on the hard shoulder, switched car off and back on again couple of times and no change! I then took out the DVD and put it back in and again no change...

Then i took out the two fuses for the sat nav (73 and 75 I think) and when I put em back in and started car the screen was back to its normal colour but when you select the sat nav option I got the following

So I carried on my journey and bit later pulled into a service station and did the fuses again and then it worked!!

Since then its happened again (not the blue screen but the sat nav "please wait" part), and when it happens I take out the two fuses and put em back in it works again...

I have been told that it could just be that the unit and dvd need a clean as when the unit cant read the dvd it will overheat and cause it to hang/crash. Need to get hold of a good cleaner and have a go

Thanks
Urfan

Hi i have the same screen on a 2003 range rover it was because i had had a leak and it killed the mkIII satnav and now i have no satnav in its the same screen you have shown above. When i recently tried to fit a MKIV it just showed a black screen with no options, If anyone knows what this issue is please help as i really want the proper screen back

Kind Regards

Johhny

Sounds like you bought a Mono coded MkIV ... it can be recoded to work on a colour screen with NavCoder.

Do a forum search and you should find all the info you need.

As some of the others have said its the TV module taking over from the Nav unit.

The nav unit crashing is normally down to 2 things, map discs and OS.

If the OS has been updated recently then this could be the problem..

Also, some units laser pickups don't like backups/damaged disc

The "please wait" is indicative of a damaged map disc, (dirt, smudges or scratches on the surface), replace the map disc with a OEM jobbie and the unit should stop rebooting/crashing.

Hi Trapdoor

I have sent the unit back to the seller and he said it worked perfectly in his 3 Series BMW ( not sure which model ) would this be the case if it was coded for mono

Yes it could be that case..... if it is coded for mono and you try to run it on the color screen it will not show anything (looks like it does not work at all)..... You can recode it from mono to color..... Use NavCoder (for example) to do this...
