Can sat nav units be repaired?

I have a 2001 X5 and the sat nav unit has suddenly stopped working. Can these be repaired? The battery went dead dur to the fsr and after I powered the car back up, the sat nav unit has stopped working. Can these be repaired as they are very expensive to replace.
Thanks for any help..

What is it, a MKIII? They can be fixed, if it died, by sending to Wetzler, Germany to the repair shop. write to [email protected] and tell them what you want. They answered my inquiry recently. I actually got my reply from [email protected] from Elektronik Service Wetzlar Gmbh, Philipsstrasse 1, 35576 Wetzlar

You'd probably be better off buying a Mk4 DVD based Navicomp from ebay than getting the MkII or MkIII unit you have repaired. These are pretty much plug'n'play. make sure you get the right one (colour/mono) though or you will have to do a re-code.

What types of MK4 are there? Im new to this, so any basic advise would be helpful.
Thanks

You can try to repair your navi by yourself:
1. Download the navi soft, for example from HERE
2. Burn it to the CD on the lowest speed (before burning check if it is in Mode2)
3. Swith the ignotion of your car off, close all doors, open trunk
4. Wait till your navi device goes to sleep (led on the navi swithed off)
5. Disconnect two cables from the back side of the navi
6. Wait for 15-20 minutes
7. Connect again two cables
8. Swith the ignition on (Pos.1)
9. Put the CD (step 1-2) into your navi
10. wait till navi update starts (it could take for a certain time)

If this will not help then really would be better not to repair but to change to the MK4, it's very simple, just plug&play.

MK 3 sat nav repair and MK 4 trial

My mate has a MK4 sat nav in his car. Can I just unplug his one and try it in mine? Is it as simple as that to see if it works?? No other cd's or software need to be installed?? And any careful instructions when disconnecting it??

Hi! I hope you can help me.
I have an MK4 unit (4-1-12 SW), I wrote SW 32 at 4x speed in Mode 2 and I tried to upgrade SW, but nothing happened, and now I can't get the CD out.
I never used the navigation system, but a month ago I wrote a navigation DVD and pretty much the same happened, it didn't work and it didn't want to give the DVD out, but then after some button pushing and some hours it did. Then I wrote another DVD(the first one was -, the second +, or vice versa) and the monitor was flickering, the loading BMW logo showed up for a half second and then blank, and so on... But when I managed to get the DVD out, it was OK.
I thought now maybe the CD/DVD reader part is dead. Do you think it can be repaired/changed without buying a new MK4 unit?

You can just unplug it and connect to your car, nothing should be updated

There is an opinion that MK4 could be disconnected even before navi goes to sleep but I always wait till LED goes down, prefer to be on the safe side

Good luck

Try to do the same what I've wrote in the post #5.
