Hesitation on Map Viewing

Hey guys

I tried to search but I have not come up with much.

I just upgraded to an MKIV system and everything went smooth. Here is my issue.

When viewing the map in any mode (such as perspective or 2d) the little arrow on the map sort STOP AND GOES instead of streaming along smoothly. My MKIII system looked like atari but it followed the road I'm on with no hesitation and the arrow moved along smoothly.

I upgraded to V32 last night and I'm getting the same effect. The NAV dvd is not a burn (oem bmw)

Do I maybe have a scratched/Dirty DVD? Maybe try a DVD cleaner?

All other aspects of the MKIV run very smoothly and crazy fast compared to the MKIII.

Do the usual:

1. Make sure you have the latest version software (to fix any bugs). Current version is 4-1/100 (displayed as 4-1/00)

2. Check the wheel pulse is working properly (in Service Mode)

3. Check the satellite signal is normal strength (S/N 6-12 ) and PDOP is normal (<3.0)

4. Make sure you've done a calibration drive so the wheel pulses match your car. Drive on a motorway for about 10-15min. Calibration can take 1-2 weeks to be spot on.

Go into Service Mode to view the PDOP and pulse and other diagnostic data

From main menu, select Settings
Press and hold MENU and wait
10s later Service Mode appears

Everything looks good BUT...

Wheel speed sensor says ZERO while moving

So whats next?

I did NOT have this problem yesterday with the MKIII so I really doubt my speed sensor went bad at exactly the same time I swapped in the MKIV.

Speedo works fine, I do not have any faults for wheel speed sensor or an ABS light

My car was also not a retrofit

Today for good measure I pulled the battery, un plugged the nav back in and out, check the 2 plugs and antenna

No go still ZERO for wheel sensor...everything else works perfect, 8 sats, good signal

Wheel sensor is definitely the problem. You have no dead reckoning working, the nav is only using GPS signals, and GPS position fixes are not continuous, hence the "hesitation" effect.

Check the speed pulse wiring on the violet nav plug.

The Mk4 only uses one wheel sensor, the older Mk1 and Mk2 used two sensors

The standard Mk4 wiring has the DFAVL – front left wheel speed pulse - on pin 10 of the violet plug. The wire is yellow with a red stripe.

Check this wire is actually fitted to pin 10, and make sure pin 10 is clean and not dirty / corroded etc.

The Mk2 also has DVAVR (front right wheel, yellow/white) on pin 11, but on the Mk4 this signal is ignored.

Maybe you have the speed pulse sitting incorrectly on pin 10?

If you have speed pulse wires on 10 & 11, try swapping them. If p11 is working, and p10 is not, put the working signal on p10.

To summarise:
Violet, p10, yellow/red, DFAVL, Front left, NEEDED
Violet, p11, yellow/white, DFAVR, Front right, NOT USED

Thanks KIWI, your knowledge of this stuff is GREAT

My wheel speed was working last night

is it really possible for the nav to be broken in a way to where ONLY the wheel speed isnt working? I find that hard to believe but hey anything is possible.

I don't think I have any of the pins sitting incorrectly, the plug only goes on one way and the car was ordered from the factory with nav (not a retrofit, or dealer install)

Check the wiring inside the connector!

Sure, any electronic device can have any fault anywhere. Maybe there's a drop of water / corrosion just on that wheel speed pin?
Maybe the connection is bad?
Maybe the input circuit is faulty?

Anyway, you said previously it wasn't working, and now it is. Thus you have an intermittent problem.

Ooops

When I said it was working last night I meant with the MKIII and not with the current MKIV (I swapped them last night)
