Weird issue
Ps1: *In both cases, it was the same music CD I had in the player, so it might not like it. I do not know... Ps2: both cars are on the 'night mode' OS.* |

Your Nav is crashing and the graphics/video are being driven by your TV module which will take over if the Nav goes off the bus.
You are using a modded OS, but I also assume you are using a 'backup' DVD or CD map? If so, try using a genuine BMW original. Other option could be that the Nav Computer is overheating (happened to me in the past and dealer changed out the Nav Computer under warranty) - or you have loaded a slightly corrupt OS image. I very much doub the music CD's had anything to do with it TBH. |

Many thanks for your reply. I am using a genuine maps DVD. My wife just drive the BMW for 40 miles and she reported back to me that everything was back to normal. The problem was when I had the music cd in both cars. When I took the cd off at a service station, the sat nav in the
mini went back to normal. When my wife drove the BMW to work she did not have this music cd in and she said everything was fine. I know it sounds crazy, but I am now convinced there is an impact of the cd on the sat nav. I have been using the moded OS. For a few months now, it was only today that in both cars (both with the music cd in) kept crushing. I know it is hard to believe, but this is what happened. |

Also, if it was overheating I do not believe it was as both cars displayed the problem very shortly after I got in the car) it is a very unfortunate coincidence as it appeared in both cars, on the same day, and only when the same music cd was in the player. Very peculiar indeed. I am just relieved that it seems that the problem is identified. Fingers crossed!

You could have had condensation on the laser lens causing poor reading of the map discs and causing the nav to crash.
The weather may have affected both navs in both cars the same way at the same time. |

I am now back home and was successful in replicating the 'malfunction' in both cars. When the CD is not in the player, everything runs like clockwork. When I insert the CD to the player the 'freak out' starts in both sat nav units. I understand it is hard to believe, but I am just relieved it is such a simple, albeit unusual cause. I would have never believed that a CD would make such a mess in the sat nav in a million years...

Wow, what's the title of the CD.
Is it Guns 'n' Roses "Search nav and destroy"? Is the CD played in the CD player in the dash, while the nav is in the boot? If so, the CD must be generating some very odd interference signal on the data bus / power lines that is getting into the nav. Very VERY strange. Or is it "Deep Base Super Funky Thrash House" through a 10,000W amplifier that is causing such large voltage spikes it's upsetting the nav computer? |

Jochen, I've also been chipping in help (on another forum) and like you was surprised that the cd player could be causing the problem (never heard of it before), like you I also suggested that the i-bus may be being overloaded *somehow*, how, would be a mystery?
I think on the mini the cd player and the dvd nav drive are 2 separate units but they are piggy backed togeather via thier chassis, so you could be right, it could be a power related issue... Simple answer is not to play cds, but thats not really a fix. P.S, any news with regard to the navcoders IV interface my friend?

The cd is by the smiths 'the queen is dead'. I was playing the cd in the dash in the BMW. In the boot I have a cd changer and the nav drive. The problem is restricted to this cd ONLY. All other CDs play ok.
The mini nav drive is under the driver's seat, the music cd drive is on the dash. Both cars have the factory installed sound systems. Harman Kardon for the BMW and the factory one in the mini. Thanks To both of you for the input. |
