dead pixels on nav screen MK4

recently a few cluster of pixels went dead on my nav screen. they are now just grey all the time. it's not a large part of the screen and it doesnt affect my ability to see what the screen reads but it is annoying. anyone have this problem?

Like whole groups, or just a few pixels? If a whole group went bad, I would assume you've got a bad connection somewhere that could be cleaned and fix the problem, kinda of like the OBC pixels. If you've just got single little individual pixels, try using something like a plastic pen cap or a PDA stylus and rub circles around it till it finally frees itself.

it was a whole group on 2 different parts of the screen. Even when the car is off, the 2 spots are still gray in color. if it is a bad connection, how do i fix that?

That's a whole new realm for me. I don't have navi in any of my BMW's, so you might have to search around the forums or maybe just start taking the deck apart slowly till you can get inside to start cleaning it. I've used electronic parts cleaner from Radio Shack for random things, just make sure there is no power to the unit and don't spray it on the screen directly...just remove and spray the connections.

Petertn,
I see the problem your describing quite a bit in Australia.
It seems to affect only X5s here and may have to do with the screen tilted to the sky. It's able to then cop a lot of direct sunshine.

The grey areas appear when the liquid crystal material has degraded and no longer polarises light passing through it.

You can't repair this type of defect.

Only option: Order a new screen.

is this considered dead pixels? (under Aux. Vent). It started out as a couple thin lines but now its getting worse. I change to diff. screens and its still there.

This is a form of dead pixel. It's UV damaged liquid crystal fluid that can't polarise light anymore. This sort of defect has a habit of spreading in random directions and can pop up on other parts of the screen. Have not found any way to reverse it.

Is this a picture of an X5?

If so, then covering it from direct sunlight may slow the spread down, although I have no chance to prove this claim.

Only real repair is replacement of the LCD screen (just the screen, not the electronics or the housing)

As the other poster said, keep it out of the sunlight

I guess you could call that LCD damage "skin cancer" ....
