Have you got a BM54 now? You need to buy the CD changer in any case, so get one and try it first. My radio was changed under warranty so I just bought a MP3 CD changer and it worked straight away. I did have trouble creating the IDTAGS for display purposes and it was very hit and miss.

I'm pretty sure it's a BM54, but will need to pull it out to check for sure.
It has TMC option, Audiotext option, 100khz FM steps, and does not fully mute NAV, so from research this seems to indicate it is BM54 NG. (but probably pre ID3)
I have a MP3 CDC fitted, but can't get ID3 info to display. I am assuming that a EEPROM flash will do it, but your comments on ID tag formatting are interesting. What proven method do you suggest for composing ID3 data? Is there a preferred and proven method I should use?
