MK4 ODD rotary select/black screen problem ? PLZ HELP!
UPDATE: Problems has come back ! not all but some! read last post... __________________________________________________ _________ I have a MK4 with some VERY odd errors. The main problem now is that it will only turn on sometimes (black screen but power in screen), but when it does it have a odd "select" bug. Its hard to describe but ill try: On the 16:9 BMW screen there are 2 rotary buttons. The right one is the select one where you select up/down by turning the knob left/right. The you select by pressing it. But when i turn the knob only one menu item either way - the MK4 "jumps" 2 menu items back or forth. This makes it impossible to use the menu system and search for anything as it always jumps 2 items only with one click turn. I have confirmed the rotary buttons work by trying the tv tuner menu system, where it works. I also tried to downgrade the firmware and upgrade to latest again. Same results. Ive never seen this before? PLEASE ADVICE! SEE VIDEO ATTACHMENT!!! http://swebot.net/IMG_0283.MOV Last edited by lassek; 07-02-2010 at 04:22 PM. |

Verify the rotary controller is working correctly in the Service Menu. Watch the amount of steps per click. You may simply have a defect rotary controller.
Otherwise, monitor the ibus with NavCoder to verify the ibus messages show the amount of turns/clicks occuring. If so, BMBT is OK and problem lies in Nav. If not, BMBT controller is defekt. If BMBT is OK and problem is in nav, you can reload the Nav OS yourself, thus performing a reflash. Simply insert a BMW OS disv (google "BMW V32") and follow the onscreen instructions. |

Also, verify no water damage in Mk4 nav - look for signs of water staining or corrosion on outside of case. Open nav and inspect carefully near rear corners of unit for water damage. If any water damage, there is a guy in Australia who can repair for you.
The sooner the damage is repaired, the easier the repair will be. |

Well heres the thing.. When the TV tuner is generating the menu system without the navi ... the rotary works perfect! .. I already tried to flash back and forth with various firmwares.. no luck same result.. I tried to get into service menu .. But as soon as I enter the menu and let go of the MENU button it goes back to mainmenu.. Like its again double clicking the buttons itself.. I ordered the USB ibus device to use with navcoder.. however it will take a while before it arrives.. dont know if it can be of any help . . Or i can see any valueable data? I never saw this bug before? Its really riddiculous... ![]() Can anyone hardflash if needed? |

MENU always exits the Service Menu, that is how it is supposed to work. Quote:
You can also use the BMBT emulator in NavCoder to send key presses and emulate rotating the control. This will prove beyond a doubt where the fault lies (BMBT or Nav unit) Check the databus for integrity - any other odd problems? Eg: if dash indicator lights do not work but outside lights do then you have databus corruption Hardflash not needed as you have already reflashed a few times |

I thought I wanted to update some info for the techies that maybe look into this:
When the unit WONT turn on.. The red powerlight is off. And the orange eject light in the eject button is dim and how to you say flashing/blinking? I mean not from on / off .. but from dim to a little brighter.. Its impossible to eject or hold eject - nothing happens.. I can then pull the batteri or when driving actually after up to 20min.. It will suddenly turn on.. but with the bugs.. I talked to Kiwijochen which advised to open the case again and closely study for corrosion and water traces.. Ill do that later.. AND try to flash again again the oldest firmware I could get my hans on. v21(.1). |

Latest update:
Is this corrosion? IF yes - will this mean my device is 100% done? like in not fixable.? Ive read somewhere a cleaning procedure? But cant find it - anyone knows? I can first disassemble 100% when i get home.. but so far it look like this:

Which means we can speak with 90% certainty that you have corrosion on the board, which generates all of the symptoms you have discussed. Yes it can be fixed, but you need the right tools and knowledge and experience. For electronic technicians only. Autotronic in Australia can do it for you, he is good. VDO: well, ring and ask. Tell them you have some water damage and corrosion around the power switching circuitry. Whether you can find someone to give you an answer on the phone: I do not know. Whether they do component level repairs or just board swaps: I don't know. Ring them! When you have removed the board you will be able to view the extent of the damage. A magnifying glass or microscope will be needed for close inspection. A good local electronics shop may be willing to try a dismantle and clean for you. Make sure you go and visit them and take the bare circuit board with you. |
