The Mk3 has probably crashed and died.
But check the following: When the radio is on, can you control it (change stations etc) and see the station names in the display on the dash? If so, radio is fine When the radio comes on and the ignition is on, can you see a faint glow on the LCD broad monitor screen? If so, the backlight is OK and likely the nav is the problem The easiest and surest way to tell is to swap the nav with a working unit from another car. Ask on this board for fellow board members living near you to help you If the Mk3 has dies, the easiest and best thing to do is replace it with a Mk4, much faster and improved graphics, 3D view, and more customisable. |

i am having same issue. It was fine and when i shut engine down and tried to put PIN code to protect it i could not confirm last number. I turned off unit and after that i could not get it on. No lights no sound from radio. Nav unit in back is making sound but screen is dead just like lights on it and no function at all. Also few days before that hapened i noticed that BC button on turn signal handle stoped responding too. Any ideas. Oh one more thing....turn signals sometimes dont work too, not ewen when i press all 4 turn signals buton!?!? Now they work but screen is dead. ....any ideas before i start taking it apart? i already checked all fuses in back and front.

The ibus is not working correct.
Diagnose the ibus with a multimeter or with NavCoder. Disconnect devices one by one until you find the device that is hanging up the ibus May also be the electrical part of the ignition switch that is the problem |

How old is your battery? If it is original or more than 5 years old, you might consider replacing it.

Battery is 3 yrs old they put new one in BMW service. It is strong except in winter if i drive short distance often and it gets like -10C then i need to jump from another vehicle..now i summer and it is working fine. Also ignition switch i put new one last summer because i saw on this forum that people think that could be problem draining batery in winter so i replaced it, it was not expencive.

what voltage is displayed on the instrument cluster?
The fact that you have to jump start in winter is evidence of a bad battery. A good battery can sit for a week at -15 deg C and still start the car. |

Is there anyone in the Salt Lake City area that can help me with my nav/radio problems? I need to see if I can temporarily swap the nav unit out with someone to see if that is the problem. My radio stays on for about 2 minutes and then shuts off. My nav screen has a back light but does not display any info. I just unplugged my nav unit and the radio still only plays for a few minutes. I may need to replace it with a new nav unit but don't want to waist the money if that is not the problem. If someone is in SLC area that can help me out I would appreciate it.
Thanks |
