Are you using an original map disk or a copy? If you are using a copy, try an original and see if that behaves any differently.

If you have the same problem with an original disc, you need to change out your dvd laser. It's about $100 or so for the guts of the dvd player (official BMW part) and a real easy DIY change (search this forum for laser change).

If you have a copied disc, you can try reburning the image to a new, high quality dvd (burn at slowest speed) and give that a try.

Warn laser maxine, and the cold disc is making the laser scan out of track, once warm it falls into line.

Replace laser.

Like admranger suggests try burning the backup to a different dvd, this sometimes helps.

The funny thing is my problem occurred when it was hot outside.

However, it turned out to just be the disc. Burned a new, name brand, high quality dvd on sloooooow speed and all is well now.
