If I replace the complete Sat Nav DVD drive mechanism as shown in the how to article, do you have to reload the firmware or is this stored on another part in the Sat Nav.

It's stored on the main board. You should only need the map to go again.

I need a BMW nav DVD reader or drive mechanism. I have a 2003 Z4. The unit new is $3,600. Hard to believe, but same quote from two dealers after they ran diagnostics. Said it was shorted out. Can these units be repaired or purchased used somewhere? Thanks, Steve
