MK IV Sat Nav issues- RESOLVED

Recently bought a E53 X5 with sat nav.
when i bought it the prev. owner said the battery went flat and since then the sat-nav hasn't worked.

when i turn the car/screen on all i get is the old looking blue screen with no option of sat nav on there.
when I've got the map disc in the unit it tells me when im coming up to a speed camera, but still not showing anything on the screen.

Also has just started playing up, think its due to the heat? every now and then the screen will go completely blank and then flicker then come back on again.

I have bought a second hand MkIV DVD unit and this made no difference, am i right in saying the screen could possibly be at fault?

Any help will be greatly appriciated
Thanks Karl

hey Karl...

welcome to the forum...

when you say "old looking blue screen", what do you mean? blue screen with nothing on it? or, blue screen with "bord computer", "television"?

also, it is always nice to know which model of the X5 you got... helps in helping to troubleshoot...

It's the blue screen with the on board comp on and tv options.
Think I read its running off the tv module now?

Sorry about little information, it's a 2006 E53 Le Mans edition.

Thanks

if you have the "old" looking screen with television wording, the screen is generated by the TV module, as you noted earlier...

also, it seems that two Nav modules did not generate any screen menu but you say that the speed camera info came over the speakers... while it is a possibility for the two nav units to be defective, the probability of it is rather low - therefore, based on this and the fact that the sound from teh nav is working, i would suspect a break in the electrical connection from the iBus wire on the harness that connects the nav unit to the rest of the system... without that iBus wire, the system will not recognise the presense of the nav unit, and such, will not generate the screen... it falls a bit outside of this theory the fact that the sound is coming through, so there is a possibility, that only the "video" wires from the nav are broken, but i still suspect, that the problem is with the iBus wire...

regardless, it seems that there is a broken/chaffed/shorted wire in that harness...

can you trace that harness and check the wires for any abnormality??

oh, and you can create a permanent (changeable at your leisure) signature that will list the year and type of your x, so you will not have list over and over again...

Thank you for the reply and the very helpful information.

Yeah the nail in the coffin is that the other nav unit i got seems to have a route pre-programmed and is telling me to take junctions ect- even shows destination info on the dashboard and on the inboard computer on the nav screen.

would a broken wire also cause the screen to flicker/ cut out when its hot aswell or could that possibly be a different issue?

I shall start stripping the boot out this weekend then, you wouldnt have a circuit/ wiring diagram that i could use for continuity tests/ feed tests.

Many Thanks

a chaffed wire will cause flickering - check the wires around bends, sharp turns... the nav unit gets power, does what it is supposed to do, calculates the route, but can only relay the information via the audio, as the video and/or iBus info is not communicated to the rest of the car...

the break can be anywhere between the nav system and the monitor - start checking the harness/loom from the TV module on... try even to unplug the TV - with no TV and no Nav, there will be just blank screen on the monitor but the radio should continue to work...

try to knead the looms in the trunk, to see if you will be able to get anything on the monitor - if there is a chaffed wire, you may get some intermittent image from the nav when you knead the loom... however, while kneading, make sure you do not damage any other wires... lol...

i will try to dig up the pinout for the iBus for the nav unit, you might be able to jump the iBus pin from the nav unit onto some other location of the iBus, such as the CD changer ibus... the iBus throughout the car is technically same single wire, so you are not going to short it by jumping the ibus from the nav directly to other location... if the nav info is picked up, then you might want to consider making the jump rather permanent - stop looking for the break in the cables and make a permanent jump.. if the jump does not help, then you can continue the search... it is 2:30 in the morning here, so i will try to look up the the ibus pins on the nav tomorrow, unless somebody has it handy and will post in the meanwhile...

Many Thanks for the great info and help

Issue is resolved now, you were correct in your diagnosis, i found a damaged/ stretched wire in the boot, looks like it had got caught or damaged by the towbar been put in and out of its holder.

Very impressed with the knowledge and help.
Thanks very much!

Glad it worked out!!!!

if you could do me a favor, can you edit the title of this post to say SOLVED, or RESOLVED, or something to this effect, so in the future, if somebody is looking for a solution, they will be able to relay to this post?

Ohh.. pics... we always like seeing the pics of the cars from the new members...
