Actually market share and all of the other gobbley gook may be important, but the real deal is that people (whoever they are) want a machine that works seemlessly without a lot of issues. ;) For a lot of folks that spells Mac. For others that spells Windows. I guess some of us around here are just amazed that for the average windows user the pain they go thru to keep their PC up to snuff dosen't spell logic.

All in all, there's no arguement one in favor of another if it floats your boat. But you gotta admit some folks just seem to enjoy Windows consistant pain. But whatever........:popcorn:

Did you get the old PC to run again?

One of the MS updates probably turned on MS's own firewall/av, thereby making Symantecs unnecessary. If you check by hitting START, then WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER, it should tell you whose stuff is running.
Since I work for IBM, I have to use Symantec stuff and so all my MS antivirus is turned off (see photo below), incl automatic updates (which come from corporate after they are blessed for exactly the same reason). Do you have a "safepoint" that you could roll back to?

Well, the interim "results"...

I copped the Norton dwnload removal tool, did the download; went
back in and found some frag files of Symatec/Norton and tossed those
too.

Last weekend we were out of town, so I shut off the 'puter while we were
gone. On new startup this past week, I found that many features of IE6
were not working, glitching, etc. For example,
-my GMail (native on their site as opposed to my OutlookExpress which it flows through),
would not let me access/use their non-HMTL version, which is the handy one to dump old
messages in bulk.
-Any link that requires Macromedia Flash Player will not work even though I
"have Flash Player" installed, have used it for years, etc. The FP site will
not download an update for me.
-Yahoo Games, used by the CEO, will not work as usual.
-The ActiveX alert never shows, so I can't dodge around it to enable
certain sites/usages to perform.
-Many sites come up looking "clear" with not the normal background and I
can't do any site prefs, fixes, etc.
-A couple of subscription sites: WSJ, Morning Star, et al, will not access via
my usual Faves/Bookmark, so I waddle through the log in, which does not
recognize...neither the geek wizards at the WSJ or M Star could help me get "through";
they were amazed and stumped, even after having me diddle several settings and do the
usual workaround attempts.
-Can't access the "Search" function in my Docs; I get the "dog", but no
window to type in search parameters.
-Can't access the Organize Bookmarks and Favorites: I get some weird
window with the usual folders, etc.
And, on and on and on...
-My son-in-law, who ran his own successful IT biz for 15 years, spent hours on the phone with
me this week, took over my computer several times and still couldn't "fix" the glitches. He suspects
IE6 in combo with "something" that occured post Norton dump and full restart.

I'm not sold on IE7 in lieu of IE6, so I just downloaded Opera to run in tandem and parallel to IE6
and give it a try as browser for awhile.

That's the low tech version of my situ...we shall see.

I believe i mentioned this in another thread. But i got it
on good authority that removing Norton is a procedure
one would want to be careful about.

Norton changes registry settings which when other apps are installed
and through usage become embedded in the OS.
Also, the Norton De-Installer doesnt remove all components of the AV software.

It appears that the only viable solution to removing it completely is to re-install the OS.

I took your previous caution to heart and read all I could on the
uninstall and its peculararites; but, it had to go. That maybe part
and parcel why my IE6 is so fragged...thus, the trial use of "Opera"
as a browser, which while I'm still learing it, seems to have cured
most of my previous glitches.

I know, I know...Mac. :rofl:

I've found that the Norton remove tool on their site works okay. You need to make sure you remove all of the Symantec components from the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs (there are usually three separate ones).

The AV I am using now is NOD32 from http://eset.com

It works well, is highly rated and is unobstrusive.

I also recommend IE7 over IE6. More secure and stable and more convenient with the tabs (like Opera or Firefox). I primarily use Firefox but I use IE for some sites.
