Here is a link which will take you to a video of what the 'rainbow effect' is on DLP tvs. When you go into a store, bring a DVD that has black and white scenes on it. Then move your eyes very quickly from one area of the TV to another.

Honestly, to me it would be a toss up between a Pioneer Plasma, Sony SXRD (LCOS), or a DLP if I didn't see rainbows (I haven't investigated DLPs so I can't make a brand reccomendation there, but Mitsubishi has always made a nice set). Plasma gets very pricey beyond 50", so if you want a 60" set I would go with a SXRD....

By the way the possible screen burn in that I reported a few hours back appears to be isolated to a single set that a person bought, so ignore that fact. LCOS seems to be the best technology for rear projection right now, but thats just my opinoin.

There is a 70" Version of the set, that is called the "Qualia". Qualia is Sonys top of the line brand. The Qualia has been out for about a year now and is based upon this technology. In fact, these smaller sets are supposed to have better LCOS panels than the $13,000 Qualia. Gotta love how quickly technology is changing (and going down in price!).

We just bought a 1/2 dozen panasonic 50" plasmas for the new facility, they're incredible, i highly recommend panasonic plasmas.

Ya know, I forgot to ask you guys another important question....are there going to be windows behind your couch/chairs? Some manufacturers put a very reflective protective screen on their sets, whereas others use a matte screen which minimizes reflections. The more polished (i.e. shiny) screen shows a nicer picture at the cost of relfections in the room (Plasmas always seem to use shiny screens, as far as I know). The matte screens tend to come on the rear projection models (DLP, LCOS, LCD, etc)

but in reality, a projector takes up less space than a tv. not-2-mention, when it comes time to move, it'll be much easier. to each their own though. best-of-luck on ur purchase. :thumbup:

JV - I was at Ultimate Electronics last night and they got some of the 60" XSRD's in last weekend. They said they hope to have one on the floor by this weekend.

To Chris F's point about the screen covering - the guy at Ultimate said the XSRD Sony's would have the reflective covering like a plasma instead of the matte finish like a typical LCD or DLP.

Hmmm thats interesting. The initial owners said the finish was matte, but we'll have to wait and see. I haven't seen one 'in the flesh' either. Looks to be a nice TV though. I expect discounts will be heavy, especially if the economy tanks...
