MK4 Nav Frozen Screen-Newbie

Hey guys,

I only have a quick minute to post this up, so if i should search let me know, but help would be appreciated.

I have a (early MY) 2005 X3 with MK4 Nav (with original V24 OS) and the wife was driving this morning and i went to program in a new destination for her (while on the highway). Essentially the screen froze, i am stuck with the "Input Destination" screen. The Radio will work (sound only), the Nav Screen is froze as mentioned. Now if i had a traditional computer i would just "re-boot" but since the car even when turn on and off, constantly supplies power to the Nav there isn't a reboot. Here are my thoughts:

After work today i am going to disconnect the battery (negative terminal) to perform a blue-collar reboot. Is there an on/off switch on the DVD based Nav unit to execute a reboot of the system w/o killing all the electricty to the whole car? Think the negative terminal trick, will do the trick? I am still under 4/50,000 warranty so i can take it in, but i have no time this weekend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Jon

You might not have to do anything, the nav will reboot after car beeing idle for 15 min or so.
To reset the nav and the rest of the car remove the ground from battery for a while 15 min or so
And it is highly recomended to update to latest OS, you will be amased how mutch better and faster it is

Thanks that is helpful and hopeful. I am a big wuss about upgrading to V31, i just can't pull the trigger (call me a pansy).

Any other thoughts.

OK, you're a pansy :D

You may want to clean your DVD. A dirty disk (or bad duplicate copy) can cause the nav drive to freeze.

And I agree, you are a pansy ;)

UCrew talks sense, probably your disc at fault.

MK4 Nav Screen Freezing

Hello,
I have been having this same problem. :iagree: This has happened to me on the past three trips from Spain to England with three different map DVD's and on two seperate OS versions. The system will work find for awhile and then the whole system will lock up on me. I can not use the Nav screen for anything. After awhile (varies from maybe 25 miles to maybe over 150 miles) the system will kick back in again. I also noticed a couple times if we turned the car off for a break that when we returned the system will work again. I am thinking of buying a protable Navigation system to replace this one (which is a shame and waste of money) as I am very syspect about the built-in Nav system in the X5 and it is driving me round the bend  . I have tried to clean the DVD's and the system itself with not much effect. Anyone have a clue as to why this is happening, and what I can do to solve this problem? Thanks

Sorry should have said I am using OS V29 with DVD 2007-2 but have been having this problem with OS V28 as well and DVD 2006-1 and 2006-2 as well.

Thanks for the gratuitous pansy references, at least everyone is paying attention to my thread. ;)

Well much like noted by E5M1R it did reboot after an extended off, and it is back to working. Not to concerned, yet i have my 45000K inspection II coming up so i will at least mention it, eventhough i don't think they will do shizzle about it.

Thanks again guys.

Do two things:

1. Upgrade to latest OS, just in case there is a bug causing your problem that is fixed in the latest OS.
Latest is 4-1/100, and is on the V31 OS disc

2. If that doesn't change things, then you have a weak laser.
Fix a new DVD mechanism, which you can puchase for a good price here:

A new laser will make a massive difference in reading ability.

Don't fit a silly little TomTom when you have such a superbly engineered integrated system
