Holding doors open for people

Has this happened to you?

Many times I'll be holding the door open for my wife so that she can push the stoller through and people on the other side just waltz right through the open door cutting my wife off. Usually they don't even acknowledge you or even give you a smile - like I was the doorman or something. Here's the kicker, it's usually women who do this. I guess they're use to people holding doors open for them.

One time it happened my wife sarcastically said "Thank YOU!" and this cow and her teenage daugher turned around, said "Your welcome" and gave us the finger!

Yep... I HATE that!

Same thing with elevators... when you stand aside and let someone else on or off first, and they saunter by you with their nose in the air like you (and everyone else) were put on this earth for their convenience. Used to make me wonder why I bother, but then I realized that I'm not doing it for that specific person... I'm doing it because it's the courteous thing to do.

I work with 500 women on a daily basis, I've forgotten what it's like to get on/off an elevator first or just walk through a door without holding it.... and yet, a majority of these women think of themselves as what used to be known as "women libbers"... go figure.

yeah, i hate it when they don't acknowledge you when you hold the door open for them. what seems to work for me is when i give a stare that says, "you better say thank you or i'll slam this door in your face mofo!" they usually will say thank you and then i smile and say you're welcome. if they don't say anything, i'll usually say you're welcome very sarcastically, which usually will get a thank you. i notice it's usually introverted people or ones with low self esteem that won't say anything. in your case, i would have told the cow to go to jenny craig since weight watchers doesn't seem to be working.

Well obviously the woman w/ her teenage kido in the first post were "High Class"...I'm sure they lack many other 'manners'...too many to start the degrading process...just forget about them, you probably wouldn't be the first...and then they'll wonder why they're always getting the 'short end of the stick' in various life situations.

...Of course it's always been viewed as a chilvery (sp?) thing..however, I will always open the door for people coming out I don't look to see if they're male or female/young. Or if I'm entering and there's people coming in behind me I just hold it and stand off to the side and enter at the end.....I want people to know that there are still 'kind' people in the world regardless if I'm female or male.

....the words "Pass It On"....always come into my mind when nice exchanges take place.

Then you are an exception to the rule.
Sometimes I hold the door open and it doesn't matter who it is, and sometimes I don't.
I have to really pay attention to not hold the door open.

Curtesy should be about common sense and not about male vs female, as you pointed out. The point of my rant was that I'm holding the door open for my wife with the stroller, not so much a chivalry thing. How can anyone miss the stroller? Do they actually think that they should go through the door before someone pushing a stroller? Grrrrr!

I called her a cow not because of her physical appearance but because she was obviously born in a barn. I'm not one to insult people about their physical appearance no matter how deserving it might be.
