EDUCATIONAL/GENERAL COMMENTS

The Federal Trade Commission offers the following advice when choosing a warranty.

Although not required by law, written warranties come with most major purchases. When comparing written warranties, keep the following in mind:

* How long does the warranty last? Check the warranty to see when it begins and when it expires, as well as any conditions that may void coverage.

* Who do you contact to get warranty service? It may be the seller or the manufacturer who provides you with service.

* What will the company do if the product fails? Read to see whether the company will repair the item, replace it, or refund your money.

* What parts and repair problems are covered? Check to see if any parts of the product or types of repair problems are excluded from coverage. For example, some warranties require you to pay for labor charges. Also, look for conditions that could prove expensive or inconvenient, such as a requirement that you ship a heavy object to a factory for service, or that you return the item in the original carton.

* Does the warranty cover "consequential damages?" Many warranties do not cover damages caused by the product, or your time and expense in getting the damage repaired. For example, if your freezer breaks and the food spoils, the company will not pay for the lost food.

* Are there any conditions or limitations on the warranty? Some warranties provide coverage only if you maintain or use the product as directed. For example, a warranty may cover only personal usesas opposed to business usesof the product. Make sure the warranty will meet your needs.

For more information, visit the Federal Trade Commission's entire publication at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/...ts/warrant.htm.

Whew...I hope WarrDirect is not next; maybe they'll survive due to OneSource peeling away?

Imo, this ExtWarr game is a sign of the times, vis a vis the complexities and inherent high costs of post-warr. ownership/repair; Xs, all BeamErs, and bascially all brands, inlcuded.

Interesting, but a tad concerned on what shoe drops next. Thanks for those posts...I had missed that news.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am one of the unlucky ones to own one of those 1Source warranties. Nobody is answering the phones there and I am not getting any calls back from Hawaii's Insurance Department either.

1Source is owned by PrimeGuard Insurance, which is an Hawaiian based company, that's why Hawaii's Insurance Dept is involved.

It has changed my thinking on all extended warranty companies. Be careful out there, it's an expensive mistake.

AutoXer,
I am in the same boat as you. Except that I bought one for my X5 and one for my daughters 328i. Cost me $4200.00 bucks in Aug for the 2 of them. That is not the end of it. I took my X5 to dealer on Nov 20 had some work done total bill was $1800.00 1Source warranties said they would pay for
$1000.00 of it. I paid the rest, got the car home, had it 1 day SES light came back on and oil was setting under the X5. Took it back to dealer they said needed mass air flow sensor and bunch of hoses and head gasket. Total bill for all that is $1700.00. They then told me that they can not get hold of 1Source warranty company, to ok the work. They have been trying since Dec 5 and my X is still sitting at the dealer waiting for them to ok the work. I talked to my dealer today they informed me that they never got there $1000.00 for the work they did early and if I want my car back I have to pay that also. Plus the $1800.00 for the work it needs now. So let see $4200 plus the $1800 plus $1700 = $7700 that I am out. Just what I need right before xmas.
I called my credit card company talked to them about it. They said the only thing to do is to cancel my credit card and file with them a fraud claim and they would reimburse me the $4200 that it cost me for the warranty to begin with. After I send them all my statements that show the charges that 1Source warranties charged to my credit card. So I am going that route. Wish me luck.

Sorry to hear that, Jack. I definately am wishing you luck and hope that at a minimum that you recover the $4200.

I have WarrDirect, but if they do go toes up, I will be out: I paid them by check. Thus, no CC support if/when. Ahhhh, hoping they are ok.
I'm gonna call them tomorrow just to listen to their reassuring jive they will be handing out.
GL to all of us w/any fookin "ext warr".

Latest on 1Source

Here's the latest from Hawaii's Dept of Insurance. They are being liquidated, so go file your claim now, probably will get pennies on the dollar:

Jeeze Louise! That's crappy. I always knew the aftermarket warranty game is dicey and I was going to go with Warranty Direct but ultimately went with BMW's own corporate offering, the Original Owner Protection Program. At least I have no fear that they will go teets up and if they did, that means BMWNA is dead too. Given this news I am very glad I went with the BMW deal.

Best of luck to you guys!

Do you mind sharing the details of your BMW deal? Coverages, prices, etc...
Thanks.

I was all set to go with WarrantyDirect for the 6years/100K coverage until I see this 1source fiasco. So...now I'm either going with something like BMW or nothing at all.
