The S1 displays the V1 radar info. on the instrument cluster. (It can also be displayed on MID or NAV.) With S1 installed, the V1 does not light up when it alerts. The S1 is controlled and configured using the steering wheel volume control buttons.

But you can still see the V1

I still don't get it, if a cop can still see the V1 what do you gain?

The point is (with the S1 option) that if the V1 is mounted high enough and it operates in complete dark mode, it may camouflage in as part of your upper console. Because it doesn't light up, the cops may not notice that it's there.

Exactly - no red lights flashing up high on your windshield for the boys in blue behind you...

I think the cops will see it.

I think the cops will see it and you are more likely to get stopped.

I think you are better off running naked.

I have driven for many years since that stopped and don't use a detector.

In traffic I gennerally go as fast as the flow will allow.

If alone I go posted plus nine unless someone else wants to lead the way.

Radar detectors aren't illegal in NY, and I think your paranoia about being stopped simply because you have a detector is unfounded. I've been using detectors for over 20 years and have not once been pulled over because I had 1. In fact, when I got pulled over in Connecticut once the cop was actually asking me questions about it (i didn't get pulled over for speeding, i had a blown headlight and he let me off with a "get it fixed warning").

note: my cousin who is in the NYPD says "I couldn't care less if anyone has a detector or not, if you're speeding you get a ticket, if you're not speeding I ignore you, radar detector or not" . Obviously that's just 1 man's opinion, but telling everyone to not use a detector because you feel that you were pulled over for owning 1 is a little too short sighted in my opinion.

Almost every driver speeds

The speed limit in the NYC area is generally 50 or 55.

The speed limit on most highways should be increased to 65 or 70!

A unsafe driver is the one who switches lanes all the time.
I was taught that the left lane was the "fast lane", however in NY people don't care and cause others to go around.
The cops should tickets the jerks doing 55 in the fast lane!

That said almost every driver is speeding.

The cop therefore has his pick of speeders.

Conclusion:

What and how you drive makes a big difference.

I think if he sees the detector you or more likely to be stopped.

That's not unique to NY, every state has that problem. Drive in NJ or CA for a bit and you'll be happy to get back to NYC.

That being said, I still don't understand your paranoia about getting stopped for having a detector in NY, they are legal here. I socialize with a lot of cops, both Nassau County and NYPD and none of them have ever said that they pull people over for having detectors any more or less than peope without them. In fact, they state quite the opposite, they don't care.

I'm curious, where were you when you got pulled over? Did the officer say that you being in possession of a detector had any bearing on him pulling you over or is that an assumption by you?
