another example of Bush being bought out. Hanging with his Dubai buddies who line his back pockets. Honestly there should be a huge uproar over this, it's *just not right*!

Update, the US portion of the deal is on hold. The rest of sale will go through.

It's not about National Security, it's about corporate interests. Just follow the money...

John Snow
CSX
James Baker
The Carlyle Group
Impending free trade pact w/UAE
Dave Sanborn
(who has been handpicked by President Bush as his nominee for the Administrator of the Maritime Administration) Sanborn was hired by DP in 2005. That one year with Dubai Ports was all he needed to broker the Dubai Ports deal to purchase CSX.

This being said, Dubai World Ports has a pretty good track record in terms of management, and the assumption is that the shareholders of P&O did their homework before agreeing to the purchase...shipping is so internationalized as it is--and, only about 2% of containers arriving on our shores are even inspected. It is likely that terrorists would originate from an EU or Asian "friendly" port anyway. Regardless of who owns the port management company, the customs and security are still controlled by the US. No doubt there is a quid pro quo in that Dubai is seen as a moderate, friendly ally, and it is emerging as a new Hong Kong in many ways. I would argue that Dubai would would excercise extreme diligence in terms of security, as any slip-up on their part would basically shut them out of the business. i.e., I would be safer flying Israel's El Al anywhere in the world because of their security meausures. Keep in mind one of the biggest single shareholders of Citigroup is Saudi Prince Walid Ibn Talal. Have Saudi terrorists infiltrated our financial markets? No. Were some of the 9/11 hijackers of Saudi origin? Yes. http://service.spiegel.de/cache/inte...339427,00.html

I would submit that electronic terrorism is a far greater threat than a rudimentary bomb hidden in a container--which may or may not detonate. Here's an idea--let's allow Dubai World Ports to manage our border with Mexico...I'll bet the title to my X5 they would get things sorted out in about 90 days to the benefit of our security while providing economic opportunity for Mexicans who simply want to earn an honest living. (It's the Border, stupid)

Great post, this is the first post on this thread backed up with facts

I read the Time mag article with facts and on CNN before I commented here. I think that most of us know the facts and still do not like the deal. It is not issue of racism to me it is an issue of risk management and the fact that we have people dying every day and we are going to hand over keys to seven points of entry. Those organizitions that we are worried about have money...there are people that have a price, getting people past our customs...stopping a ship in the middle of the ocean and putting something aboard...a pay off to look the other way when it arrives. Working around the system....it is about risk to me and that is what I think about it.

and considering that i live in NYC and half of us on the East coast this is rather troubling never mind the fact that our port security sucks now as it is never mind giving it up for sale must have been a hell of a happy ending

In 2002, the Coast Guard estimated it would take $5.4 billion over 10 years to improve port security to the point mandated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act. Last year, Congress appropriated $175 million. The administration had requested $46 million, below 9-11 levels.

Again - it's about $$$ - not NS

You don't need too many facts to have a built-in divining rod for BS. As Erin mentioned in her post: follow the money.
