I have an opportunity to transfer, with my family,to the USA (from Australia) for a couple of years...can anybody suggest the best location to move to considering the following; Nice beach not too far away Nice rental home for the family @ 2000.00 mth Friendly neighbourhood. & preferrably not in LA. Your feedback would be most appreciated...also apart from income tax, are there any other taxes to be aware of? Cheers Rod |

Wow, what a cool opportunity. Is there any way to narrow down the area? Maybe at least pick a coast. Having said that, any metropolitan area in California near the beach will cost more than $2000 a month.

We tax everything, including your post. See you haven't even arrived and we're taxing you already. JK. I'll leave that for the experts to answer

I would think that a medium sized house in say Hawthorne by the PCH might be close to $2k?

Hermosa Beach would be nice as would Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, even some parts of Long Beach but would that be too close to Los Angeles for him? Only he can tell us that. Gresch: Do you miss Hermosa? Oz: Give us more info and we can give you better info back. As you can tell, there are a lot of knowledgeable people located all over the country who can help you out.

miss hermosa? does the Pope like to wear white? HB is plenty far from downtown LA so that he wouldn't be overcome by the "city". I worked on Wilshire and over on Katella in Anaheim and HB was like another world... i would cross the PCH and all of my troubles seemed to just fade away.... I'ld move back there in a second... what i don't miss is the Government of the State of California. Hawthorne down by Redondo isn't bad, east of HB and MB isn't so great. El Segundo might fit into his price range, but that's close to LAX.. maybe up in brentwood would be good. I didn't like MDR too much, it's a very pretty area, but the marina just dominates it and there really arent any good beaches.... if i had a boat i'ld have loved it, but i only had my kawasaki 1100STX out there with me and it took like 20 minutes just to get out of the marina! that was THE longest no wake zone i've ever been in .

If you decide to move to Florida then you won't have to pay state income tax

If it weren't for moving to HB, i never would have bought my '01 X. My '99 Tahoe that i bought in NY wouldn't fit in the tandem garage under my apartment in HB so i left it on LI and my parents used it and I bought the X from Long Beach BMW in october of '01....
