Jeff,

Congratulations to your son for getting such a great first ride and to you for being a great dad.

Did you get him a full set of tools also? He's going to need them since there are about a bazillion possible mods for an E36.

Regards, Mike

Lucky kid. My first car was a Chevelle I bought with 200.00 and began restoring.

Every state is slightly different. In most states, one can get a driver's permit at 16 after s/he passes a written exam (laws, signs -- that sort of thing). The permit authorizes the student driver to drive with a licensed driver for (and this is where states differ) six or 12 months -- after which the student driver can take his driver's test at the local DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles). In my case (22 years ago), it was 17 for the permit and 18 for the license. This was in NJ.

Here in Michigan you can get a temporary license at 14 years and 9 months and start taking drivers training. You can get your restricted drivers license when you turn 16.

In Maryland 10 years ago when I got my license the law was at 15 you can get your learner's permit and start drivers ed classes (10 1-hour classes and 3 2-hour driving lessons with the teacher). Once you are 16 and complete driver's ed, you take the test on the computer and drive a course at the MVA. For the first year, you have a 12:00 midnight curfew where you cannot be on the road between 12:00am and 5:00am.

I believe now the ages have changed and for the first year you cannot have additional passengers under the age of 18 or something like that.

Scottie-

In the state of Virginia, I got my learner's permit at 15 years, 8 months and we all took driver's ed classes- both classroom and behind the wheel- in public school. I got busted for driving w/o a license in a boosted unmarked police car when I was 15 & 5 months, so I had to wait till I was 16 & 5 months to get my license instead of the customary 16th birthday because I got a year probation Oh yeah, the wait at the DMV is LEGENDARY!

Those Crown Vics could really go!
