I believe the conclusions we come to about all of this boils down to what we believe we can hear. After that the issue can come down to ease of use and compatability. This report talks about these differences and it's conclusions are debatable in the end, The decision we make is often based on what we like. Thats why there will always have Mac or PC debates, MP3/MP4 yada yada yada. Find something you enjoy and go with that.

As long as you tell iTunes to import MP3's you can select unprotected MP4's in the library and then click Advanced -> Convert Selection to MP3.

iTunes can make anything you want, except for WMA's. It can convert unprotected WMA's though into MP4/MP3, etc...

MP4 (AAC) is a much better format soundwise my friend. Perhaps compatibility wise, MP3 will work over more devices, but MP4 is able to reproduce 192kbps MP3 sound at 128 kbps, which produces smaller file sizes with higher quality then MP3.

AAC is the future, and the much better codec.

@PeteG

In iTunes if you want to rip a CD:

First, set in preferences (under advanced -> Import) what codec you would like iTunes to import under.

1. Insert the CD.
2. Wait for the CD to be recognized, and for iTunes to contact the CDDB database and download CD info (if there is any).
3. Click import
4. Wait for the completion sound.

Also, if iTunes starts to play the song as your import, stop it and your imports will finish a lot faster... (CD lens doens't have to go back & forth on the CD).
