I have handed food to homeless and hungry in the city. There are still hungry people out there.

I don't think you can oversimplify the situation in NYC by simply implying that City Harvest is the answer to everyone's problems. Especially since you don't live here (even though you might have prior to living in FLA)

Unfortunately, that is a HUGE understatement.

I stand by my statement, and echo JV's comments. I work in one of the places society uses to fix all its problems: an Emergency Dept. Find a drunk passed out? Take him to the hospital. Some teenage runaway caught by the cops? Take her to the hospital. Grandma living alone but shouldn't be? Take her to the hospital.

Not once, in my 24 years of medicine have I seen someone honestly "starving" from lack of food in the USA. Will I admit there may be some who are hungry for a day or two, now and then? Of course. But "starving"? I don't believe that. I think it is "conventional wisdom" mixed with "political correctness" mixed with "middle class guilt".

hungry people don't go to hospitals, they go to shelters or "soup kitchens". My aunt runs 1 on Long Island, saying that they're "busy" is an understatement.

Gresch- ask your aunt sometime how many of those people are gaunt and malnourished and how many are there to get free food so they can spend what money they have on drugs, alcohol, or plasma TVs and Playstations.

I'm sure some do, but to shit all over a class of people because some are complete morons isn't my style. I've met some of the people that go to her shelter/clinic because I help out there when I can, the people that you describe are the exception and not the rule.

It's not a class of people- anyone can go hungry or get down on their luck.

This is true, and happens more than people think.

gresch, You are taking offense where none was intended. I was saying that the comment regarding starving in the USA is hyperbole. I remain convinced that while there are many that can "get down on their luck" (there were times in my own life when I was one blown head gasket from completely being broke), I don't believe any would starve. There are just too many resources in the USA to help. Your aunt's soup kitchen is a great example.
