Saying that this book is non-fiction because the Bible is one of the characters in the book is like saying you had actual sex with jessica simpson because you had a dream about her the night before.

Doh. Not saying the topic is non-fiction just saying the fact that the document exists is non fiction.

It's sort of in the middle between fiction and non-fiction, same as the Bible or the Illiad. There is probably some truth mixed up in there, but I'm sure it's sensationalized with plenty of fiction as well.

OK I'll take the bait. As i understand it The Illiad is a story that consists of 24 books. It starts with the apple of discord, and continues through the Trojan war, which took place five hundred years before Homer's time. The story is some fact and some fiction. it is the oldest surviving Greek epic, and it is debated whether Homer truly composed it. The same doubt goes for the Odyssey. Everyone agrees wih that.
Which part of the Bible is in the middle between fiction and non fiction? Quote:

But if you look at the Bible from purely a non-religious historical view, there are things in the Bible that are obviously true. For example, it is known for sure that the Egyptians had Jewish slaves, and that a leader named Moses lead them to freedom. But whether or not it happened the way depicted in the Charlton Heston movie -- that would be the "sensationalized" part I am talking about. The problem with both the Bible and the Illiad is that there was no written language at the time of the events in these books. Archeologists agree that the first written language appeared in Greece around 500-600 BC. The Trojan war, if indeed a real event (this can be debated), happened around 1200 BC. So for 600 years the specifics of this event was passed on by word of mouth. Did you ever play the "telephone" game in kindergarden when you were a little kid? The story at the end of the line rarely has much resemblance to the original story. You can bet that both the Bible and the Illiad suffer from this fate as well. Unless of course you believe that the Bible is the word of God and the earth is 6000 years old, is the center of the universe, God made the world in 6 days, etc.... If that is your viewpoint, then obviously you would disagree. |

#1 The Exodus as depicted in the Bible is the accurate account. I't not a Charlton Heston movie.
As far as Bible events being passed on by word of mouth, remember the Holy Scriptures have a superhuman origin as to content but a human history as to their writing and preservation. Moses began compiling them under divine inspiration in 1513 B.C.E., and the apostle John wrote the final portion thereof more than 1,600 years later . All 66 books are in harmony and where written as men were born along by holy spirit. So if God himself tells you what to write word of mouth is not a factor Regarding the belief that the Bible is the word of God and the earth is 6000 years old, is the center of the universe, God made the world in 6 days, etc.... That is NOT my viewpoint. My viewpoint does not matter. The Bible answers the question and provides the proper viewpoint. This is a common mistake. The Bible does not teach that the earth is 6000 years old and it does not teach that the earth was created in 6000 years. The Scriptures, in stating, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Ge 1:1), leave matters indefinite as to time. This use of the term “beginning” is therefore unassailable, regardless of the age scientists may seek to attach to the earthly globe and to the various planets and other heavenly bodies. The actual time of creation of the material heavens and earth may have been billions of years ago.

No offence taken but unless you have proof to the contrary then the text of the Bible does validate that the people and events described therein are factual.
There are some Christians who read the same Bible as you & I read and interpret the text as meaning that the earth is 6,000 years old and humans and dinosaurs once lived together as beast and man. Actually the Bible interprets it's self if time is taken to study it. It's up to us to verify what is written. Some folks can interpet text as meaning that the earth is 6,000 years old and humans and dinosaurs once lived together as beast and man all they like thats their right, But it dosen't mean it's the truth. It just means thats their truth About the only thing you or I will ever read that has not been embellished even a tiny bit are commendations for Medal of Honor awardees. As far as commendations for Medal of Honor awardees are concerned I have never read one. But I can tell you this i hope they are not like funerals where people brag about what a great person so and so was when everyone know he or she was a jerk. JV[/QUOTE]
