As soon as a seat opens up in F1 I bet he bolts back in a HEARTBEAT.

I would think that an accomplished F1 driver like him would go to DTM or ALMS before NASCAR. But as you said, if a F1 team comes calling he'll go back to the pinnacle of auto racing.

Wait a second - the 2006 F1 season isn't over, yet there is no seat for Montoya in the 2007 season? If the big name teams don't want him, then he's headed for a non-competitive team with a commensurate pay cut. He's already been cut by Williams and now McLaren. Coming to the U.S. make complete sense.
if JPM secures a deal that provides permanent financial security, then I can see where he stays in the States. The financial upside to his deal is huge. JPM will get $8M a year from Gianassi in a racing series that does a better of putting its promoting its drivers than any other motorsport. These drivers get huge revenues from endorsements - and JPM stands to profit from entire Latin American market. I am not a Nascar fan, in fact, I like watching DTM or ALMS more than Nascar. But I seriously doubt that DTM or ALMS drivers make 1/4 of what the leading Nascar drivers make. Gary Paffett, winner of last year's DTM series, walked away to become the McLaren/MB test driver for '06 and is possibly in line for Montoya's #2 seat behind Fernando Alonzo. No, I think Montoya makes a long term commitment to Nascar. He's not going to walk away with at least a couple of wins under his belt. And it's not likely that he'll win immediately, so he's here for a couple of seasons. That's my take. |

I'm an optimist and I like JPM, but I cannot see him being any more than a niche player in NASCAR, sorta like Boris Said. He's talented and fast, but high-strung and inconsistent. I'll give him one season tops. I could more easily see Jeff Gordon go to F1 than JPM come to NASCAR.
