I'm assuming these are automatics? I didn't read every article on that link.. This makes me glad I drive a standard and glad I didn't get the other 330xi available at the dealer when I bought mine, a 2001 with auto.

It's not new news that BMW automatics tend to fail later in life, particularly past 100k miles. Usually by 120,000 mi, you're living on borrowed time. Which is another reason to buy a manual...........

I can understand automatics failing ten years ago. But with today’s technology this kind of thing shouldn't happen, and with a BMW at that. Now you have me worried about my 04' 325xi.

my friends 00' 323i had the same problem at around 70,000 miles...happened while trying to pull out of snow...reverse just stopped working...thank god for CPO!

From the comments here one would assume that BMW makes automatic transmissions. I didn't know that they did, I thought they were all sourced from ZF, GM, etc.

I'm assuming that ZF or GM also made the Steptronic in the X5?
Cuz when I had the 2002 X5 4.4i, the tranny would quite often be rough and it would kick when it's upshifting. Especially in 3rd to 4th. I had gone to the dealer about it, and they made it better, but then it started to kick wheng oing from 4th to 5th, even if you're cruising.
