Cingular is just doing what everyone knew they would do when they merged with AT&T, and that is dump their old network and move everyone to AT&T's GSM network, which, outside of major metro areas, isn't very reliable (had AT&T for a few years, switched to Verizon 2 years ago and have had great service)

To be clear, Cingular Wireless and the former AT&T Wireless BOTH had TDMA and GSM networks. In my opinion, TDMA sucks and GSM was definately the smart way to go.

BMW is coming out this fall with the new E70 X5. What if BMW were obligated to continue producing the E53 X5 on the same production line as the E70 for as long as there were any customers that still wanted to buy them? At some point, when you are only building a handfull of E53's compared to the vast majority of E70's that are being built, don't you think it would make economic sense for BMW to raise the price of the E53's so that the cost burden for producing these vehicles was borne by the purchasers of those vehicles and not being spread to those that are now buying the newer E70 model? It's a simple supply and demand curve.

I think AT&T needs to increase their coverage on GSM. I carry 2 cell phones because the GSM is not covered everywhere but Verizon Qualcomm/CDMA works even in suburbs. I like GSM phones better but for coverage.

Actually, they are doing the opposite. They are cutting off the old AT&T Wireless network and moving all of the former AT&T Wireless customers on to the Cingular GSM network. They will now just operate one network -- based on GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS technology -- which is the dominant worldwide standard.

are you sure about that? I thought that they were merging the 2 gsm's and dropping the analog...

Regardless, GSM coverage and reliability in the NY tri-state area isn't as good as Verizon's CDMA for reliability. I can pretty much say the same thing about the Los Angeles area as well as Boston, the Hamptons and the Joisey Shore (those are the areas that I'm in most frequently)
