It is true in North America, but sometimes disputed by our European friends, who don't always make the distinction.
The one that gets me is when a reference is made to a "Beamer" every now and then. A beamer is not a BMW, it is a video projector (among other things).

The Beamer is the newest project of the M group....it's a time transporting vehicle somewhat similar to the DeLorean used in Back to the Future but will more closely resemble an M coupe, possibly the M3. Reports also say that it will be referred to as the "Ultimate Beaming Machine".

I knew I had read about the BSA origin of Beemer somewhere....
This is from wikipedia. No guarantee as to accuracy. The term "beemer" started as a pronunciation of the acronym "BMW," adapted from the early-20th-Century British pronunciation of BSA (as "beeser" or "beezer"), whose motorcycles were often racing BMW's. Over time, the term became closely associated with BMW motorcycles.
