Perhaps it may be that at least from my experience the laid back thing gives license to a continued disrespect for other people. Cell phones are just a fraction of the callious disregard people have for others and throughout my brief years on this planet fewer and fewer people know the difference between common courtesy and the just "get over it" approach. One thing i found interesting is if you made an appointment with someone in LA they just showed up when they pleased and they expected you to "Get over it". That and other things seem to have risen out of what you describe as the get over it approach. I don't mean to ascribe any of this behaviour to you but i saw so much of that kind of thing i decided against dealing with it. I personally don't care for that kind of approach but i respect the right and decision of others who wish to live that way. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of Folks in Norcal who's elevator dosn't go to the top and guess what. I have to get over it. Anyway For years I have always tried to explain my experience while in Southern California but I could never put my finger on what it was. This independant film explained it very well. Maybe one day I'll purchase it. Thanks for your comments. http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/l...snow/film.html Quote:

1. I am/was an Old School Gym Rat. Neigher I flirt with the pretty ladies in tights, nor exchange greeting unless if he/she is someone I see there all the time at the gym. For me lifting area is my sactuary, I get there get my job done, exit ASAP. It is hard as it is. I HATE PEOPLE YUPPING AT THE LIFTING AREA. RESPECT THE GYM, and PEOPLE WHO ARE HAULING A$$! Heavy lifting often requires great deal of focus! If the gym is big enough cardio area might be a different story. Still people care not to know about crabs you got from a man you met at the bath house for example.
2. It was East Coast vs. West Coast feud back then... Now NorCal vs. SoCal Now? 15 years old but still a great movie, Steve Martin's LA Story http://imdb.com/title/tt0102250/ Only difference now would be homosexuals who are out and open. I was out the Grove mall in LA and surprised how many gay couples were out there. At least 30 % approx. Why can't we Get Along? Can We Get Along? ----Black Angelino who started the LA Riot. For some reason, every single friends of mine who went to CAL from SoCal live there and stay there now. They don't seem to mind smaller homes, etc. They seem to enjoy cultural and intellectual superiority. From my personal experience of having frequent business trips in NorCal back in the days, there seemed to be more snotty people out there. After a long day of field service trip I had no choice but extending 1 day trip to an overnight stay at the LOCAL FREAKING HOLIDAY INN. I was in shabby clothes. The receptionist looked at me up and down asked me if I happened to have a credit card or you cannot stay here, even before I opened my mouth. I had few more incidents like that, but never in SoCal. After all I guess I am a gum-chewing Cola-sipping glaky Sothern Californian now. |

Well, another striking difference between Nor- and Socal is driving etiquette -- logic?! -- on freeways, or lack thereof: people up north understand the idea behind "left-most lane for passing only" and do not generally just sit in the left lane at 60 mph.
But in SoCal, if you look down a large stretch of freeway from an elevated point, you'll see that -- strangely -- MOST cars are in the LEFT most lanes rather than the right. Simply put, if you want to pass slower traffic, you usually have to do so on the right. Most of the world understands the concept of "keep right except to pass," and NorCal sorta does ... but SoCal just has NO concept of it whatsoever, and I have no idea why. Think about it: most traffic bottlenecks are caused by peoples' inability to pass slower traffic and it causes a chain reaction. I'm seriously going to start a website called keeptotheright.org lol ... yeesh.

So that's where all the clueless drivers out here come from .... hmmmm. Even freaking huge a$$ trucks drive 30mph in the left (FAST) lane ... Drives me nuts! This is so not the case where I am from (East Coast) .... they know the left vs. right lane driving rules ... I support your website

I live 30 miles north of LA. Closer I get to LA, people tend to get a little bit nastier and angrier. I had a chick flipping a bird at me when I flicked my bi-Xenon when she made a illegal left-turn in front of me from the othe side of 4-way street. A week ago in a not-so-busy two-way road I had a Latino man blocking the road chatting with a friend who parked on the right. I waited at least 30 secs for him to finish his chatting, and finanly went around him over the yellow lane. He started cursing and honking at me for passing him by. I would have given him a hand jesture but I know this type of people have nothing to lose and often 'packed.'
In my town, we get some absent minded drivers but rarely with the "Metropolitan Attitude." |
