Yah that takes some balls!
Personally, and I'm sure I will get flak for this, I don't know why a country would want to invest billions of dollars to build a city under the water table when it is 100% proven it will be destroyed again. I guess a similar argument could be made for Florida, oh but wait, Florida is a profitable state where as NO was so in debt it couldn't get a credit card. Sam Kinison said it best: "I'm like anyone else on this planet -- I'm very moved by world hunger. I see the same commercials, with those little kids, starving, and very depressed. I watch those kids and I go, 'Fuck, I know the FILM crew could give this kid a sandwich!' There's a director five feet away going, 'DON'T FEED HIM YET! GET THAT SANDWICH OUTTA HERE! IT DOESN'T WORK UNLESS HE LOOKS HUNGRY!!!' But I'm not trying to make fun of world hunger. Matter of fact, I think I have the answer. You want to stop world hunger? Stop sending these people food. Don't send these people another bite, folks. You want to send them something, you want to help? Send them U-Hauls. Send them U-Hauls, some luggage, send them a guy out there who says, 'Hey, we been driving out here every day with your food, for, like, the last thirty or forty years, and we were driving out here today across the desert, and it occurred to us that there wouldn't BE world hunger, if you people would LIVE WHERE THE FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT! YOU LIVE IN A FUCKING DESERT! NOTHING GROWS OUT HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW OUT HERE! YOU SEE THIS? HUH? THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT'S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT'S GONNA BE SAND! YOU LIVE IN A FUCKING DESERT! GET YOUR STUFF, GET YOUR SHIT, WE'LL MAKE ONE TRIP, WE'LL TAKE YOU TO WHERE THE FOOD IS! WE HAVE DESERTS IN AMERICA -- WE JUST DON'T LIVE IN THEM, ASSHOLES!"

He's just trying to defend himself. The truth is that if the French Quarter had been destroyed, I'm sure he and all of his cronies would make it a much higher priority to get it all rebuilt. Unfortunately, nobody cares about the poor people there. Nagin doesn't, and you can be sure as hell that the Federal government doesn't. My prediction is it will be many many years (perhaps even decades) before the poor neighborhoods in New Orleans are rebuilt. The government will continue to dish out large multi-billion dollar no-bid contracts to the likes of bechtel and haliburton, but most of the actual work will be delayed indefinately and some will never be completed.

I've read recently a report from the LA Gov's office that while nearly 25% of the US Natural gas supply comes from off the coast of LA, the state basically gets jack s%$t revenue from it due to some political deals worked out long ago. The Fed. Gov. makes the money from LA oil & gas exploration, unlike TX and Alaska, which pays out a dividend each year to citizens cause they rake in so much dough up there. Something is wrong with that.

He's not inaccurate in what he said. Five years later, in a much more confined geographic area and with more financial resources - I would have expected NYC to be much further along than it is.
I was in New Orleans this past Feb and was surprised by the amount of clean-up that had taken place. Ofcourse they gave priority to the business districts downtown and by the French Quarter as these areas produce additional revenues to fund other clean-up efforts. And yes it appears as though wealthier suburbs get attention prior to the poor areas (I assume political and other economic reasons for this too). But overall, considering the geographic scale of the damage, I'd say it's moving quite a bit faster than NYC. |

If only that pesky Hudson River wasn't being kept out of Manhatten by the foundation of the twin towers.... I think it is a little more difficult to work in a city like New York then Nagin realizes.
