It's a trend these days. The same is happening with LCD panels.

For instance, the average street-price for a 19" computer LCD was $325 last year. Today you can get a 19" LCD for just around $250-270.

Plus do you remember those crazy days around the year 2000 when you'd land a 15" LCD for $499? LOL!

I have a pioneer elite 50" plasma and I highly recommend it. the ones coming out very shortly will be 1080p screens (which is necessary for blu-ray at its best quality) --- they're about $4k for the 43" and about $6k for the 50" and then there is a 61" which is like 10k.

You mention Plasma and DLP, but not LCD, and not LCOS.

I voted for the Sony LCOS (50", also available in 60" and 70", but the 70 costs too much). Great TV, not a wall mount (but I don't have a suitable wall anyway, a plasma would have gone on the same type of stand). I liked the picture better than the others I looked at at the time, and it has excellent native resolution, 1080.

So, IMO just get it now unless you want to wait for some sale incentive at Best Buy or whereever.
I think that TV's are not like PC's the cost of a good laptop is flat but the features go up. The LCD and Plasma is a new technology and the prices are dropping as new manufacturing methods evolve.

I've been looking at the 1080p Westinghouse LVM-42w2 LCD HD 42" Monitor which has been selling for as low as $1500 at Best Buy and $1549 at Crutchfield. It's received some good reviews. LINK

Just a comment on burn-in. All phosphor based displays are subject to burn-in to some degree, including CRT's. When you bought your last CRT TV or computer monitor did you even worry about burn in? Exactly.

All I know is that when I went to Best Buy the Sony had the best picture but cost a lot more.

The Westinghouse 1080p look interesting but the test point out that you have very few sources of 1080p. I would bet that 1080 will become the standard in a few years and the cost will drop. Not sure that if you want to buy a LCD set today you should pay for 1080p?

All of this said I know you have more teck expirnce than me and would interested in how the Westinghouse performs. I would like to buy a 26 inch unit for my bedroom but will probally wait till next March.
