What was the weirdest food you've tried?

I was in LA the other day. My friends and I went to the Japanese Restaurant Specialize in FUGU, blow fish with the infamous neurotoxin.
http://japanesefood.about.com/cs/sea...gublowfish.htm
My friend insisted that it has medicinal effects for bad hangovers and absolutely safe (the chef has special license to treat this). Fugu chiri (clear blow fish soup) I had yellow Mountain Dewish color with pretty blend taste. Fortunately I am alive here to tell the story about it.

The same night I saw my client having Main Lobster sashimi on the put back on the top of the same lobster chef extracted meat from, live and kicking. Let's say I didn't like the stares.

I had my days doing business in different parts of Asia. Whenever my local rep. dared me to try local gourmet dishes, I haven't backed down once.
Fried Scorpions and grass hopper (China), Snake Poison Shots, and some animal meat sometimes raw.

Do you have stories you wish to share?

Nice.. they do it with live prongs (big shrimp) too in Asia. Kinda bad to say no to them, specially when they are inviting you an expensive dinner.

I'm always up for trying new kinds of foods. I usually like them.

I've tried ostrich. I think I would draw the line at scorpions though.

If you're a gastronomic thrill-seeker, you'd probably enjoy dining at Typhoon at the Santa Monica airport. They specialize in Asian cooking of every type - Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Malay, Thai, etc. There is a section of their menu devoted to "insects" - crickets, scorpions, water bugs, etc., while another part of their menu is devoted to "amphibians" - frogs, salamanders, etc.

The crickets are especially tasty and go very well with beer. Just don't eat with your eyes open...

There's all kinds of California roadside diners up and down Hwy 101 and Interstate 5 that serve ostrich and buffalo burgers served from livestock of local ranches. That's one of the benefits of a California roadtrip - being able to eat weird foods.

From 25 years of carrying the bag, travelling many parts of the world,
I've had some weird to me/unusual stuff: I tried anything that was presented and enjoyed most...ostrich, fugu, duck blood soup, all the various "caviars", ono,(urchin gonads), et al. I found the "ribs" in a Seoul joint, to be less than tasty, (as they were dog ribs), and the "still moving" prawn in a high end Kyoto resturant was visually odd, but all in all, most of the food went down fine.

From an occasional great steak to the outstanding sashimi joints of upper crust Tokyo, it was worth the try.

MD - do you mean uni?

One of my favorites. Most non-sushi eaters think of uni as something akin to eating baby shit.
