HDTV: Sony or Mitsubishi 1080p

We're replacing our tv after a basement flood couple months back. Anyone know how sets from each of two companies compare? Target size will be ~60".

Plasma or LCD? Either way I'd say Sony will be better than Mitsubishi

Go with flat-panels and hang it on wall, won't loose the TV next time basement floods. With the prices so low these days for flat-panels, they make more sense. Or you can just get a nice projector. I am also in the market for >50" flat-panel.
Pioneer Pro1540HD and Panasonic TH-65PX600U are good in plasma. For LCD; Sharp Aquos LC-65D90U is good. Sony is out of plasma TV market and the biggest LCD they have on their site is 52". Samsung is other major vendor but not sure about their quality.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either brand. I personally like Mitsubishi better, and have found them to be a slightly better deal as well, but it's hard to lose with a Sony if you can get a good deal on one. Your best bet is to find a place that carries both, and look at them (the exact models you're considering) side-by-side.

For plasmas, I prefer Panasonic, but I've had several different Mitsubishi TVs, including a 60" DLP right now and it is a fantastic set.

The 60" SXRD is gonna give you the most bang for the buck, Vig. Or go with a projector.

Sony SXRD will be about half the price of a plasma with the same native resolution. Not worth the extra cost, IMO, given how fast things are changing with the various technologies.

I got 62" Mits DLP TV for $1,600+Tax at the closeout last Fri. It thought it was a great deal and bought extra for my dad too.
If you are interested in DLP some 1080P is not true DLP I read somewhere it uses some sort of interpolation to achieve 1,920 vericial resolution., I don't know the details but let me know if someone does.
I haven't got this delievered yet but I'll keep you posted.
I was going to buy 67" Samsung DLP for around $3,700 originally.

I have a pioneer elite (720p/1080i 50") and the new 1080p 50" is supposed to be quite impressive
