Be careful if you get that Active Zone bass. I have a Fender American Deluxe Jazz V that I REMOVED the active preamp. I found that it "colored" the bass sound too much. You can't turn it off or disable it by removing the batteries. I started with new pots and everything and made it passive. Much better! You can find a few people around the web that say the same thing.
I also just bought the Marcus Miller Jazz V. I highly recommend that! If you don't care for the 5 strings, the Marcus 4 is still a very good choice because it also has the active/passive switch. I leave the preamp OFF all the time on my bass.

And here I thought everyone raved about the active stuff because it gives the bass more BOOM and just makes it sound "bigger". I've also heard there is new technology that is starting to bring some guitars into the active realm.

As for changing active to passive, when I used to play with a band back in highschool/college, the guys wanted to kill me when they found out I removed my active pickups for passive... and the shop I took it to was close to not doing it cause they said I was crazy

I did it...I brought an epiphone limited edition four channel used from guitar center...the rep said the guitar was usually $399.00 and I got a rarely played all blacked out version for $249.99 and a Spider III amp for $99.00...they tossed in the gig bag, stand, and pics...I paid for the self learning kit $20.00, the line $20.00 and the quick connect strap $12.99...all told I walked out for $449.00 ready to go...does this sound like a good deal...I learned the first string E,F, & G and I have to ask...is it ok to charge ahead not feel like I have mastered those three notes on the first string or just sit there and pound them into submission and become bored? Any thoughts?

Congrats - the Epiphone and Line 6 amp is a good deal (esepcially with all the other stuff "thrown in" - Guitar Center? Right?)

You'll get bored on the three top strings pretty quickly - only tunes playable on there are Three Blind Mice and Jingle Bells.

Go to www.chordbook.com and click on the chord generator and scales and start learning the blues and pentatonic scales. You'll start hearing a lot of classic rock and blues songs coming from your very own fingers.

Stick with it - it can be a little frustrating at first - build good fingering habits to minimize the "buzz" and have fun with the amp - that one has the built-in modeling and effects I think...

Nice! I'll have to post some pics of my rig...

my X is getting jealous because my Tele and effects board are getting all the mods lately...just picked up a Crybaby wah and a Dunlop volume pedal...searching for a gently used Vox Tonelab to get some Floydian sounds out of my set up....

U could have just spoke to me in Spanish and I would have understood more...so much to learn.

Sorry about that - I buy the effects to cover up the fact that I am a mediocre player at best... you can get a lot of different tones and sounds out of a Spider amp...but you shouild stick to the "clean" setting (or don't push the "overdrive" button) when practicing so you get used to the sounds that you hands make (instead of the effects on the amp)...
