what kind of music do you like?

Check around for a good guitar teacher in your area and get a private lesson. If you pick the right one (and that would be a challenge in itself), he would design a program for you and he might even comment whether the guitar you got would be the right model to start with. Once you have a program to follow, it would be up to you to spend a lot of time on it. The practice sessions will make you or break you.

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough that our neighbor sat down with me all the time to teach me guitar and ukulele because he saw the glow in my eyes. It wasn't an effort for me at all because I was so excited and fascinated about the way this guy played the guitar that I wanted to be like him. I went on to play classical quitar in my older years but the past 10 years I have been exclusively playing Hawaiian-style guitar (non-traditional tuning) which we call "slack-key" in the islands.

My advice to you is to put away the beautiful Ybanez GSA guitar in its case for now so you won't scratch it and go buy yourself a $100 nylon string traditional guitar and use it for your lessons. When you find that playing guitar is for you, I guarantee you that you will have more than 2 later in your life anyway. While you are at the store to buy the other guitar, also buy a guitar holder. This is where you will keep your beginner guitar, not in a case, and place it in a very accessible area.

I found that I practice more when the quitar is staring at me all the time. I now have my Rain Song guitar and my ukulele within arm's lenght of my desk so that I can reach out for one of them while I'm reading the X5 World threads, surfing the net, or waiting for downloads!

I played drums for about 5 years and i got tired of always feeling left behind. Since drummers just sit in the back and on their butts the whole time. So i started learning guitar since summer. I say you just do what the other guys are saying and just check out some guitar tabs. If your a big music guy, try finding some music that sound pretty easy. Then find tabs and work your way up to faster speeds once you get fingerings and things done. Thats what i did. Now i'm learning chords, i hate chords. I don't know why but i just do haha.

I hear ya man, but yea I am practicing cords, and i know A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Em, Am but i have diffculty moviing form cord to cord, i just pause in the middle when moving its hard tho. My fingers are sore but i could care less, its fun!

Go figure Im in ur ballpark, i started on a hilo baritone uke, then i got a lankai concert spruce top, then i got the ibanez, now the aigle i love them all tho they all have a unique sound which i like a lot. as for a teacher yes i have been looking, but i haven't found someone i like yet. Oh i live in westchester, ny if anyone knows anyone really good.

Haha man, when i first started playing guitar i swear i felt like my fingerprints were gone hahaha. No bleeding though......yet haha.

I have been seriously considering this myself. I have always wanted to learn to play and I hear that is best to start with acoustic. Is this true?

Only difference is having an amp and not having an amp. Unless you get a classical acoustic, finger patterns and strumming will be the same. That's based on my experience with guitar and bass.

As for cranking out easy tunes, Sabbath is one of the best bets... straight simple power chords. If you're interested in other songs, or different music, figure out the key/scale/chord progression being used (it's easier than it sounds), and play rythmn with just complete chords and strumming.

A must learn for all guitarists is Smoke On the Water, Wish You Were Here, Pride and Joy, Stairway, Iron Man or Paranoid... at least all the guitartists I know, known them.

I've been playing over 25 years.... Go ahead and GET AN ELECTRIC GUITAR FIRST! I think its old fashion to think you need to start on an acoustic. I teach many students right from the start with an electric. Besides, you'll practice and play more often if you really enjoy the sounds you make. If you keep it up, there will be a day when you will want an acoustic. I have several, but I love playing electrics. Acoustics typically have a wider neck and stiffer strings, so they are harder to play... of course this factor helps you gain strength. Get an electric and learn some scales and chords.
