I had an H2 for a bit definately NOT an off-road vehicle underpinning is the same as a 2500 suburban they are extremely underpowered for thier size and weight plus as is common with the CV IFS systems on american trucks the turning radius is terrible so if you are planning on any trail work it will drive you nuts....Personally the land rover discovery would be a good choice they are very abundent (given a production run starting in early 90's through the LR3 intro two years ago) relativly nimble and a great all terrain vehicle as well...just dont try to pull them by the brushguard (usually mounted to bumper not frame) and they do great! The LR3 is great as well (Had one for a loaner while my S600 was in the shop) but I have no expierence with them off road. Also if you want to do big wheels I know yokohama and toyo (possibly others) make mud terrain tires in up to a 22 now

I am by no means an off road expert but it seems to me if one is serious about it the the only vehicle i have ever seen that fits offroad needs is a Toyota land cruiser.

the old ones were great has anyone had a chance to trail test one of the new retro style ones yet (IIRC now called the FJ)? they have some pretty solid ground clearance

Land cruisers and the land rovers have been built for rough terrain look at the UN and european military vehicles you will see a lot of both

Toyota FJ (the new ones)
Wranglers (somewhat)
H1's

Told you, the Land Cruiser is a PROVEN off road vehicle, it had long pulled and proven how good it is at what it does
