AC Cobra 427 vs. Viper GTS Drag Race

I though this was pretty cool.

Doubtful that was an original Cobra. It was probably a modern version, but you never know.

Whenever you put 500 ft/lbs of torque in something that's scarcely over 2,000 lbs soaking wet you end up with something godawful fast. The mother of my wife's best friend once owned Bill Cosby's Cobra, one of only two built by Carrol Shelby with dual Paxton Superchargers (the other was for himself). Apparently it had around 800 horsepower (and a short life, as a subsequent owner totalled it in an accident). It would be worth well over a $million at auction today. That particular car was the subject of a Grammy winning comedy album by Bill Cosby called 200 M.P.H. At the end of the skit, after scaring the piss out of himself just trying to get it out of the driveway, he gives the keys back to the Shelby American delivery guy and says "Give it to George Wallace", although today he would probably say "Give it to Michael Richards". My favorite line of the skit... "The car had not moved, and already it was killing people."

Wow, that's amazing. I wonder what it will go for at auction. That particular car is a complete restoration, as it was found some years back in sad shape and missing some mechanicals, including the original super chargers. Nobody knew the significance of the car. It's good to see that someone spent the time (and a LOT of money) to put that piece of automotive history back into shape. Apparently the wrecked Cosby car ended up in England. Hopefully a car buff has restored it as well.

Here's the link to the story and pics from the guy that restored the long lost Cobra. It was quite a piece of junk when he found it. http://www.wurthitdesigns.com/cobrastory.htm

In his words
"I literally walked into restoring this car, it was sitting out side of a body shop on the outskirts of Granada Hills, Ca. From a distance I wondered if it was a original Cobra due to the fact it had a big bubble hood on it. After talking to the shop owner for awhile he asked me if I would be interested in restoring it, having never worked on a Cobra before I was quite interested in taking on the the task....

The superchargers were gone along with intake, carbs, mounting brackets, top hats, and throttle linkage. This car came with a C-6 auto and that was replaced with a 4-speed top loader. The carburetion was now a set of Webers. The power brakes (yes! power brakes) did not work, along with a list of other parts that did not function, fuel pumps, rear end cooler pumps, calipers & rotors, windshield wiper transmissions & motor, all electric's( the original dash was thrashed and gauges shot), floorboards were trashed, no battery box, engine and trunk compartment aluminum skins were a mess. The list goes on, I think you get the idea.....

After making an assessment of the Cobra's condition, I really wanted to try and find out what the history of this car was. I located the CSX number and called S.A.A.C. and told them the number. It wasn't long before they called back and asked if I was sure of the CSX number, I told them I was. I was asked if the car had a big bubble scoop on the hood, I told them it did indeed have that type of hood. I was asked if I was sure and told them ("I'm standing here looking at it as we speak") I was then told about the significance of this Cobra."

Is the Cobra supercharged? I didn't think so, but I swear I hear a blower in the background.
