We're not talking about 1080p vs 1080i signal processing. We're talking about native panel resolution. Two different things.

"i see" in any case is important because isn't that the most important thing, "what the picture looks like" So then what is the difference?

Very true. Unfortunately we don't get to fully assess "what the picture looks like" until well after we hand over our money so we are left with evaluating the specs and reviews before we buy.

The issue is the "demo mode / burn mode" these sets are setup as in the stores. They look kick ass and super high contrast but then you bring a set home, the picture looks like crap. The end user then is left with a lot of calibration and what not. Do not buy on marketing hype alone...research

Yep again. I've calibrated a few sets and I'm amazed at how different the settings are and how different the picture looks vs out-of-the-box. I've learned to totally discount how the picture looks in the store when evaluating a TV unless it's properly calibrated and placed in a dedicated HT showroom with proper lighting and no other TV's on.

Go for it!!! Panasonic makes an excellent plasma (no problems with the 50'' one in my basement after 4 years). That's an excellent price and best of all Costco has the best return policy of any retailer (and wholesaler).
Not sure if this is your first HDTV or not but make sure you get the right cables (price does NOT mean the best) and figure that installation, mounting, etc will NOT be cheap!!!
