Trip pics!!

In case you haven't noticed me missing for the last few days, I went on a mid-winter trip somewhere . Lets just say, 6 days later and about 1400 miles, this is what the X3 looked like. Actually, it got slightly worse by the time we got home (dirt was up over the handles and windows were frosted). Writeup and pics to come, when I have time in the next couple days. Lets just say it was an eye-opening experience. :p

Yup, as some of you may have figured out, we took a 6 day trip up to Montreal for some sightseeing and skiing. It wasn't our first time; the last time we went was back in 1999 I think and I went with my grandpa in 2001, both on chartered tours during the summer. So I thought it'd be nice to pay our neighbors up to the north a visit, during the winter so I could also hit the slopes.

Day 1: This was by far, the worst travel day ever, period. My dad tried for 45 min to get the Civic in the garage (since we'd be outta town) because the stupid thing had no torque, awful tires, and I'm sure he damaged something in the process. The goal of the day was to get to Syracuse, NY and we left a bit later than desired at 11am. So it was all fine and good until we hit I-81 after the I-78 split. As some of you may know, PennDOT did a god-awful job clearing the roads. As a result, they declared I-81, I-78, and parts of I-80 closed until the next day. The problem is: WHY DO YOU LET PEOPLE ON THE CLOSED SECTIONS TO BEGIN WITH?? So, from 3pm-930pm, we were stuck on a 3 mile portion of I-81 until we finally got to an exit. (I could rant forever) We cancelled the hotel at Syracuse, and wandered our way through the uncharted, unlit backroads of the countryside until we found and checked-in at a hotel in Reading, PA after midnight.

Day 2: We almost cancelled the trip at this point, but we decided to head east on the Penn Turnpike (which was sparking clear of any snow, go figure), thru Philly, hit the NJ Turnpike then head up I-87 and the NY thruway. A long drive indeed, and I was pretty much bookin' it when I drove, averaging between 80-95mph on open stretches. The mountainous sections of I-87 got on my nerves a bit because the auto gearbox wanted to wring out the 2.5 engine (with a full trunk + 3 people) but at 90mph, that's 4250rpm in 4th. So I put it in M5 and basically floored it on the uphill stretches, with just enough torque to maintain or gain a bit of speed. A 550 mile drive done in 3/4th of a day including breaks. Amazing, and got to the hotel in Montreal around 8pm since they also closed Autoroute 15 and we had to take yet another unknown detour on the side streets.

Day 3: Just spent some time in downtown Montreal, seeing the stuff that we hadn't seen before. Some shots:

They apparently had an upcoming "Festival of Light", but unfortunately we didnt get to see it since it hadn't started when we left. But watching them set up and carve solid blocks of ice........very cool!

The side streets and alleys near our hotel. Very European since they're really narrow but have all the nice small shops and good restaruants. If you haven't been to Canada in the winter, they dont bother clearing the side streets (or even the main streets). They stick to the highways and only come down the alleys days after any snow, and of course, the next morning it's covered in snow again. No matter, Canadians are MUCH better drivers (at least from my POV).........no huge 4x4s here. They just drop a set of winter tires on their compact cars (Toyota Echos, Chevy Cobalts, etc...) and drive normally. They don't get flustered or panic over snow-covered roads or highways, and just use common sense. We witnessed NO weather-related accidents anywhere during our trip in Canada.

A couple shots from Parc Mont-Royal on the fringes of Montreal. Embarassing thing was, I totally missed the sign that said no vehicles, and drove up the snow-covered wide pedestrian walk. I was REALLY embarrassed and realized my mistake when everyone stared at us like idiots. Reading parking signs was a bit of a challenge, although okay since I did learn Spanish in High school and it kinda-sorta translates over into French, so no parking tickets. (I still have yet to kno what a "flashing green" signal means though) Whatever, the rear license plate says all.

To be continued (I'll write more later)........
