The problem is that they've lost the public's trust and winning that back will be difficult even if their products show improvement.

Like I've predicted: Toyota will take over the world one day.
GM will do better once the public sees the higher quality materials that they are now using in the new line of cars. I think that the general public has grown tired of the polyester and hard plastic bland interiors in Japanese cars. If reliability and value are equal, the public will go for quality and looks and the US automakers are getting back in the game in that area.

Btw- take a look at the GMC Acadia....

That being said, I love Subaru, it's your views that sometimes confuse me.

You would rather argue with my wording than address the issue.

1) How can the number one car maker not make cars that are more appealing to young buyers?

proven? how so?

I could easily claim the complete opposite...

Ford is below both chevy and GMC in initial quality... so how is it "proven" that Ford makes better trucks?

I thought the Pontiac GTO was discontinued?

Well, I think what's turning away Americans from domestic brands is their past reputation of poor relability. Most people see cars as an appliance. They want comfortable rides, easy-to-park steering, fuss-free (read: low tech) computer systems, good reliability (because most don't want to spend $$$ to maintain, much less repair their cars), and last but not least, big cupholders.

Toyota quality has slipped a bit recently though. I wonder if/when the public will get the message.

For sure, I place an emphasis on driving satisfaction and because Toyota doesn't deliver on that aspect, I dont recommend it to friends. For example, I'd rather my friend look at the upcoming '08 Mitsu Lancer than a Scion tC.

I didn't say in reliability. I was saying "proven" as in my first post, I said they were always picked over GM. Just open any CD/MT etc from a month or two ago.

Thumbs up They deserve to be # 1

I can't wait for the day when Toyota becomes the # 1 auto manufacturer in the world, and I know that's going to happen this year. They make great products, and there is no two ways about that. Apart from pickup trucks, the domestic's are crap. And that's going to change as well now that the new Tundra has been introduced. I can't wait for my Tundra Crewmax coming at the end of this month.

Go Toyota

They have. More recalls, more quality problems...I had a 07 Camry rental that had misaligned trim pieces, etc.

LOL! Ok, you're using a subjective car rag article as your proof, as opposed to hard and fast data from owners who reported their issues to JD power? oh boy. All of those rag articles are purely opinion. JD Power is more factual and documents how many issues real owners had with their vehicles.

I worked for MotorTrend and about 50 other car publications for 3 years, trust me, don't base your opinions on their findings.

I'm a vette owner and even when the trade rags pick the vette over a P-car and an F-car I take it with a grain of salt and realize what I would drive if I had the money
