It sould like it is her first trip, so I would suggest staying in Times Square (perhaps at the Marriott Marquis). While there isn't much reasonably priced in the Times Sq. area, you are right in the heart of the theater district.

I went to NYC and acted like a tourist for one day, and it was fun! Got in @ 8am, went to Battery Park and got a boat ride in the harbor that passed the usual stuff, etc. Then walked to WTC site, and back. Took a cab to Carnegie Deli, then walked Central Park, and then took a tour of the CNN studios. Then went to Times Square, and ate at Bond 45, which was very good. Then hopped on a plane to go home!

I'll tell you this: hotels in downtown Manhattan aren't cheap at all. And almost none of them are terribly big or newly renovated. So accept and swallow the $200/night bill, and find a good location. I've used www.kayak.com for travel bookings, since it searches all of the online sites.

Also, dont get on the subway unless you're really sure what you're doing. I know it like the back of my hand, but not everyone does, and especially not tourists.

Central Park and anything north of that area isn't the best place to be after dark. Probably shouldn't get a hotel there either.

I worked in, around and all over the City from '75 to 2000. Knock on wood but I have never been accosted,
poked at, or suffered any untoward action in those 25 years. We've been back a half dozen times since 2K.

Subway is safe and fast, esp in daytime or early evening. Yeah, there are not going to be 39 buck Motel 6s...
my point is everyone that I know that has ever done The City, has had a remarkable time. It is not Baghdad on
the Hudson anymore, or the den of hell. It's an expensive but electric place to be with more good stuff to see
and and listen to, than one has time in their lives to do.

Isn't the NY subway probably one of the most complex in the world, with no fewer than 20 lines that go different places and stop at different stops depending on day of the week, and time of day? I don't find it difficult at all and I love its efficiency. It's just a heads up. I do like NYC a alot.......I go up there once or twice a year (maybe even in a couple weeks).

NYC subway is cake compared to London.

This question (what do i do in NYC?) is one of the toughest to answer. There is just to much to do.

The Marquis is a good choice, but it's so busy and congested, you might want to stay at one of the Sheratons in the 50's on 7th Ave. They're only a couple of blocks from Times Square, but you get to avoid the craziness (the novelty wears off very quickly) plus they should be less expensive and nicer than the marquis.

In terms of theater, just pick a couple of shows, and then hit the TKTS booth in times square the day of the show to get tix (if you don't want to buy in advance).

Pick up a "StreetWise Manhattan" map as soon as you get here, any Barnes and Noble or a newspaper stand on any street corner will have them, it has all of the points of interest in NYC on it as well as the subway map on the back.

If you can give me an idea of what else you're interested in I can give you some more detailed ideas.

Great comments and suggestions...Re the NY subway system, we will likely take it on as we have the Tube in London and the Metro in Paris...a little adventure is healthy and well not boring!

Are chances of getting theatre tickets good if we wait until the day of...are they less expensive?
