Angry ID Theft! Long story...

Well, the punqueazz bastards got us...
Gotta call this am, from one of those CC "banks" that issue a multitude of cards. Sharp woman explained that they had "me" on the other line following up wondering where my new CC was. "Me" on the other line was some punque calling on his cell from Jamaica,NY and was fl/up on his app for a Hewlett-Packard Shopping CC, (so he could go and buy a couple lap tops to fence), and this Verification Dept woman thought it was suspicious. She tracked my phone # in ten seconds, called me, with the punque on hold, and told me the scary story.

This guy had ALL my info: name, birthdate, SS#, theCEO's name, my first Missus's name, (from over 20 yrs ago), my current address, (though, he was using that as "prev. add"), my CEO's SS#, my Deceased Mother's Maiden name, my previous address, (from 4 yrs ago), etc., etc.,etc.

Dunno how he got all this and it doesn't matter, now. I have been extremely careful doing the usual stuff to keep this info under the radar...

The CC Bank woman denied his app, gave me his "address and cell phone #", etc.

I called the FTC, whom was friendly and biz-like, but all they do is take the info, cop-like.

I called Equifax and plugged in an ID Theft Alert which stays in effect for 90 days, is supposedly shared w/the other 2 credit joints, and basically prevents Any credit issuance or action w/out raising a red flag and notifying me. Or, so they say.

With a FICO score of near 800 and owning No one a dime,
the CC bank was about to gladly pull the trigger, until this on-the-ball Verification Dept woman thought things didn't add up.

It is a very weird feeling and I am pissed...also scratching my head as how this punqueazz and/or his "group" got All of that info on me/us?

NEway, that's my tale of woe, "CJ-like", for the weekend.

Hang on and hide your "stuff", my friends. Even then, the bastards can get to ya'll. BR,md

I am really sorry to hear this. Just happened to my buddy too. No one is safe. You are doing all the right things. Keep us posted how this works out, I doubt I can help in any way but if I can, I will.

Unfortunately, there is a scum bag everywhere you look.

MD:

You are lucky that "sharp lady" as you aptly named her called you. This is very scary stuff - even more so given the degree of care you've given to keep it from happening.

Hopefully with the steps you've taken, you info will be blacklisted from the black market...? Man, I hate even thinking about it...glad you got a quick jump on it all.

Geeze, UncleMotor...

Oh, man. That sucks. What a tremendous invasion of privacy. I hope the scumbags didn't do any other damage, running up anything else on your dime. Please check the other credit reporting agencies, and your other CC's [if any] for any recent unusual activity. I check my CC's online regularly, but, given your recent experience, you might want to pass on this suggestion.

I don' know how the thief got all your info., but, I'm not too savy about that stuff. That's an awful lot of detailed info., much more than you can get w/US Search, for ex. If I were you, I'd call the FBI.

Good to hear that the CC Verification Lady was able to reach you before this went down.

Good luck with this, David.

That is scary! I am very familiar with ID theft and it is very common but you rarely hear of cases where the crook has as much info as this one did. DOB, SSN, address, other CC numbers, etc are the easy pieces to get but your history from 20 years ago is what is disturbing. It makes me wonder where this information was obtained from. The common sources of information that crooks tap into usually don't give as much as he got.

That blows.

When i bought my house this year i had to get my credit scores etc and in the process i signed up with Equifax for their weekly "credit alert" service. A year is only $10 and they send you an email every sunday to let you know if there was any activity such as credit checks, cc applications, etc.. It can really give you some peace of mind and it's dirt cheap.

Thanks, mates...the more I sit here and think about it, the more cranked I get. I was just having a fantasy of being in Jamaica/Queens this afternoon and watching this punqeazz dialing for dollars on his cell phone, (w/my Glock in my pocket so I could introduce my lil'friend to him.) Ok, fantasy over.

Flipping through my mental rolodex I suspect he got some info off of one of those geneology sites: even as just a casual looker, amazing what info turns up there.

The SS# is really puzzling because I bascially refuse to give to nearly anyone/any company, which pisses off some legit situs. A subsquent phone call back to Melissa this afternoon, (my new best bud at that CC house), informed me that "they" ran a cross check internally and w/the 3 credit reporting houses, and that cell phone # has been the "contact" for a couple dozen diff kinds of credit and CC apps, using other peoples' info, in the past week. (This is one guy or group, in a Freaking Week?!)

That scumbag and/or his gang are fooking organized.

There has been zero "activity" via my "account", except for this recent bang, listed on the 3 credit recording companies, so maybe I nippped it in the bud. I've been on the fookingphone all day, calling our banks, the investment holder where I have our fooking life savings/portfolio, etc. Everyone is helpful and concerned, but I Do NOT need to wake up Monday am and see my life's savings is down to about $38.50, if you get my drift. I would have to make a quick covert trip to J-Q, NY, then.

NEway, my point is, I have been very, very careful of SS#, etc.
Birthdays and email addresses are chump and I rarely "cloak" that. But, an SS# and a lil'geneology digging tells the tale on anyone.
So, batten down the freaking hatches and keep ya'll heads down.
Back to fun stuff like the Open and bsing here. Thanks.
BR,md

Wow MD! I'm glad that things didn't go off the deep end on this one but it is scary.

I'm interested in what you decide to do long term. I saw gresch's post where for $10/year one of the credit checkers (equifax?) will give you weekly updates. Does that cover all three of the majors?
