Thumbs up Best pizza in L.A.!!

Okay, being from the east coast originally, one thing I miss is good pizza out here. So, when we heard Mario Batali was opening two new restaurant (pizza place and more formal sit-down restaurant).

Well, last November, he opened his Pizzeria Mozza with Nancy Silverton (famous for starting La Brea Bakery).

Well, we've been there twice (its on Highland and Melrose) and it is always excellent.

Yes the pizza is the main thing here (crust is perfect), but also all the appetizers and Mario's Italian creations.

If you already been to Mario Batali's restaurants in NYC, then you already know what I am talking about....

He is also opening a couple restaurants in the Venetian in Las Vegas!

Have you been to Paisano's in Hermosa Beach? that was my favorite pizza joint when I was living there.... .

They say that the reason that pizza tastes different outside of NY is the water that is used to make the crust....

I've never been there, but it's hard to beat Mulberry's pizza. There's one in Beverly Hills and another in Encino. Both are amazing and are well known for their NY style thin crust pizzas.

Looks a lot better than some of the slop we have on the Main Line in Philly. Although I'm sure our cheese steaks (not steak and cheese) in Philly are head and shoulders above the places out there on the left coast.

I've heard good things about this restaurant...

And while the pizza looks great, I wouldn't exactly call it, NY style pizza. So, if your looking for a NY slice, I would highly recommend another joint on Melrose, just down the block. ALBANO'S pizza.
No wait, no fuss, just good ole' fashioned, NY slice Pizza.

And, if you don't know what a NY slice is, it's when you walk into a pizza joint and you ask for a slice, and the person behind the counter knows better than to ask you if you wanted chicken terryaki on it. They know, you just want a slice of "cheese" without having to say, cheese.

I was amazed that people on this left coast don't know what "slice" means.

The wife and I went to Mozza's last year and had a very wonderful meal, but I would confirm B's conclusion that it's not NY pizza. It's more Cal cuisine like Spago or CPK. I would also agree with B that Albano is an excellent choice for NY style pizza, but Tony's Little Italy in Placentia is the best.

If you're going to do Italian in the Melrose District but don't want do pizza, then go to Angelini Osteria on Beverly. It's my favorite Italian restaurant, it's affordable ($50-75/2), and the food is damn good.

Sidenote: Mozza's is located in the same building complex as the old Emilio's which closed back in the early 90's. Every restaurant that occupied it's place since then has failed and there probably has been 3 or 4. It's kind of an ill-fated corner. Hopefully Mozza's breaks that string.

I guess I'm kinda spoiled with my family owning a pizza restaurant and living 3 blocks from "The Pizza Capital of The World" in Old Forge, Pa, some amazing pizza places there, honestly there are 7 pizza places in 2 blocks!!
