I really didn't have a position one way or another until i read a bit more about it. Having done so i have concluded that I for one cannot read minds or hearts, but it doesn't take a degree in rocket science to conclude that parody or not comments like these when made, no-matter who makes them are inappropriate. Weather it's Dave Chappelle, Rappers or "All in the Family" makes no difference. Quote:
Personally i hope that those who hear about these kinds of issues when they come up will resolve it in their minds and hearts to rid themselves of this kind of thinking by not supporting people perpetuate it. Will someone make another stupid comment like Imus did? Of course they will. Stupid is the course in life many wish to pursue and i for one am glad to know who they are, and equally happy to call em like i see em.

I've listened to Imus for about 15 years now. This has been his style (parodies) for years. BTW, I stopped listening to him when he started selling out by endorsing every freaking product on Earth.
But a racist. . . not even close. Dumb comment, yes. |

This country is too freakin' PC if you ask me. I do a lot of Title VII litigation and honestly, I wasn't astounded by the the nappy comment. However, McGirk's jigaboo statement is too much.
Contrary to what Rev. Al says, Imus should be judged on his body of work and not a stray comment from his mouth. |

I would like to know how Al Sharpton gets to hold ANYONE to a moral standard.
Don't get me wrong, Imus is a moron for what he said, but Sharpton is one of the biggest hypocritcial self-promoting band-wagoner to ever walk the planet. He turns my stomach. Let's review Al's rap-sheet: Towana Brawley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawana_Brawley Coke buy from FBI agents http://www.strangecosmos.com/content/item/23284.html Tax problems - plead guilty to tax evasion '93; in 1989 Sharpton was charged with 67 counts of fraud, larceny and felony tax evasion in connection with the National Youth Movement, a group he founded in the 1970s. He was acquitted on all counts. In 1993 he pled guilty to a separate count of failing to file a New York state income tax return -- a misdemeanor. The Crown Heights Riots - Crown Heights Riot The Crown Heights Riot occurred after a car accident involving the motorcade for the Lubavitcher Rebbe killing a young boy Gavin Cato. A riot was sparked after a private Hasidic ambulance came to the scene and, on the orders of a police officer, removed the Hasidic driver from the scene. Gavin Cato and his cousin Angela were picked up soon after by a city ambulance. Caribbean-American and African-American residents of the neighborhood then rioted for four consecutive days fueled by rumors (in part driven by Sharpton), [8], [9], that the private ambulance had refused to treat Cato. [10] Al Sharpton became the de-facto representative for the Cato family. During the funeral he referred to "diamond merchants" considered a code word for Hasidic Jews [11] [12], for shedding "the blood of innocent babies" leading marchers shouting "No Justice No Peace". Sharpton did not start the riots but his rhetoric was seen as inflammatory and unhelpful in easing the tension between the black and Jewish communities. A visiting rabbinical student from Australia by the name of Yankel Rosenbaum, 29 years old, was killed during the rioting by a mob shouting "Kill the Jew". [13] LoanMax - LoanMax spokesman In November 2005, Sharpton appeared in advertisements for LoanMax, an automobile title loan company. Sharpton was criticized for appearing in the ads, as LoanMax has been accused of predatory lending charging fees, and for marketing them to primarily poor, urban and African American audiences. The ads featuring Sharpton were run in predominantly African American markets.[14] On December 7, 2005, Sharpton ended his relationship with LoanMax in a letter to Rod Aycox, LoanMax president and chief executive officer. The letter read, "I respectfully, but firmly decline your offer for further engagement on my part, and will not engage in any business relationship to promote auto lending with LoanMax." Sharpton said he had not done the research before agreeing to the commercials. [15]

G, good points.
The Brawley fiasco was something that could not be made up in Journalism 201 class, imo. It's the glass house/stone throwing uproar and it's growing like a cancer, imo. As for Jesse, I don't care if he's black, brown, white, pink, green, or a Martian...I wouldn't hire him to Zaino my vette. Edit: one of my fave quotes, again: "America is awash in selective piety, situational moralists and cherry-picking absolutionists." |

I think Imus is getting a 'vacation' - not a 'suspension'. Is it clear that it's unpaid?
In any event, what he said was irresponsible at the least. It was not a parady as you would expect from a Stern or Chappelle. Nor do I believe it was meant to be. I believe his statements were truly how he feels/thinks and he used poor judgement in stateing his feelings. I'm not sure what kind of policy MSNBC or others have about racial slurs. If they have a 'zero tollerance' policy like they do in many companies, then I think he should be fired. However, if they don't, then whatever alternative policy they have should be implemented. He 'upset' a lot of people by his comments (including me). I really feel bad for the girls on the team who are not 'public figures' such as politicians, celebs etc. who are natural targets for journalist. I hope that Imus learns something from this and curbs his statements on a go forward basis. I hope MSNBC get's a balanced approach to how to deal with such matters going forward. Mainly I hope that we can all be more aware and sensitive to others of all walks of life and move forward. Not being too PC, but being more aware of how our words can impact and influence others - so that when we speak, we don't get surprised by how people respond. What I find most shocking is not that the comments were made, but that Imus didn't know how people would respond. Much like Jimmy the Greek and Rush when they made comments they seemed 'shocked' that they were seen as racist. If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then it's a duck (at least that's what people will believe). Bottom line, If Imus is a racist - let him be one. And if he continues to make comments like he has, then he and the network should accept the consequences (other networks understood/understand what a Chappelle, Stern, Joyner etc) bring as potential issues. However, any penalty or not is up to the network. |
